Alvaro Morata and Rodri BANNED by UEFA for violated ‘basic rules’

UEFA have concluded their disciplinary proceedings against AC Milan striker Alvaro Morata and Manchester City midfielder Rodri, after their actions in Spain’s public celebrations following a 2-1 victory over England in the Euro 2024 final. Both players will now serve a one-match suspension. Spain became European champions for a fourth time with victory in Berlin on July 14.

UEFA have issued one-match bans to Alvaro Morata and Rodri of Spain for the pair’s actions in their Euro 2024 trophy celebrations in Madrid on July 15.

The AC Milan striker and Manchester City midfielder have been punished by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB), who delivered their verdict after opening disciplinary proceedings against both players.

It is reported that Rodri and Morata were charged for chanting: “It’s Spanish, Gibraltar is Spanish”, in relation to the British territory.

A UEFA statement said that both players will be suspended for one UEFA competition match “for failing to comply with the general principles of conduct, for violating the basic rules of decent conduct, for using sporting events for manifestations of a non-sporting nature and for bringing the sport of football, and UEFA in particular, into disrepute.”

This verdict was welcomed by the Gibraltar FA, and an excerpt of their statement read: “The Gibraltar FA is pleased that UEFA has acknowledged the severity of this incident and has acted accordingly.

“This decision sends a clear message that football must remain a platform for promoting peace, understanding, and fair play, free from divisive and offensive actions such as the chants.

“We remain committed to upholding these values and will continue to advocate for respect within the sport.”

Spain are next in action when they face Serbia and Switzerland in the UEFA Nations League on September 5 and 8 respectively.

They were crowned European champions after beating England 2-1 in the final of Euro 2024 on July 14.
