Full 48 teams: Who Has Qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup?

Following a grueling qualifying campaign that spanned nearly three years, the complete lineup for the historic 48-team 2026 World Cup has officially been confirmed. The final playoff matches concluded on Tuesday evening, cementing the 12 groups for this summer’s highly anticipated tournament.

The expanded format has opened the door for four debutants: Cape Verde, Curacao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan. They will join automatic qualifiers and co-hosts the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Here is a breakdown of the 48 nations heading to the tournament, region by region:

Europe (16 Teams)

  • Qualified: England, France, Croatia, Portugal, Norway, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Scotland, Sweden, Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czech Republic.

  • The Story: Scotland and Norway are both making their first World Cup appearances since 1998, while Turkey returns for the first time since their legendary semi-final run in 2002. Tuesday’s playoffs delivered massive heartbreak for Italy, who missed out on their third consecutive World Cup after a penalty shootout loss to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Meanwhile, Sweden and the Czech Republic managed to secure their spots via dramatic playoff victories.

North, Central America & Caribbean (6 Teams + 3 Hosts)

  • Qualified: Curacao, Panama, Haiti (Joining hosts USA, Canada, and Mexico).

  • The Story: The expanded tournament and the automatic qualification of the three host nations provided a massive opportunity for the rest of the region. Curacao, Panama, and Haiti all capitalized. Jamaica, however, suffered heartbreak on Tuesday, losing an extra-time thriller to DR Congo and missing out on their first World Cup since 1998.

Africa (10 Teams)

  • Qualified: Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, Ghana, Cape Verde, South Africa, Senegal, Ivory Coast, DR Congo.

  • The Story: DR Congo secured their ticket on Tuesday with a 100th-minute winner against Jamaica, marking their first appearance since competing as Zaire in 1974. Earlier in qualifying, Cape Verde made history by becoming the second-smallest nation ever to reach a World Cup, edging out Cameroon for an automatic spot. Notably, Nigeria failed to qualify.

Asia (9 Teams)

  • Qualified: Japan, Iran, Uzbekistan, South Korea, Jordan, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iraq.

  • The Story: Iraq claimed the very last ticket to the tournament on Tuesday with a tense 2-1 playoff victory over Bolivia, sending them to their first World Cup since 1986. Off the pitch, Iran’s participation remains a major talking point. With their group games scheduled to be played in the US amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, the Iranian Football Federation president threatened a boycott. However, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has insisted that the schedule will proceed and Iran will participate.

South America (6 Teams)

  • Qualified: Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Uruguay, Colombia, Paraguay.

  • The Story: South America wrapped up its qualifying campaign long ago. Defending champions Argentina were the first to secure their spot, followed closely by a surprising runner-up finish from Ecuador. Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, and Paraguay also advanced safely. Bolivia’s dream of returning to the global stage for the first time since 1994 ended in their playoff defeat to Iraq.

Oceania (1 Team)
