France legend announces shock retirement from the national team

Antoine Griezmann has announced on his social media that he is leaving the France national team. The Atlético de Madrid player has issued a brief statement with a video of images of himself playing for France in which he says: “With a heart full of memories I close this chapter of my life. Thank you for this magnificent tricolor adventure and see you soon.”

Griezmann retires as France’s fourth-most capped player with 135 appearances for the national team, while he scored 44 goals for Les Bleus.

A central part of France’s World Cup triumph in 2018, Griezmann also lit up several other major tournaments for Les Bleus as part of a glittering international career.

The 33-year-old retires as France’s fourth-most capped player with 135 appearances for the national team, while he scored 44 goals.

Griezmann was man of the match in the 2018 World Cup final as France beat Croatia and was the top scorer at Euro 2016, where they were runners-up.
