Bayern Legend Slams Vinicius Junior’s Behavior Ahead of UCL Clash

Real Madrid is gearing up to host Bayern Munich in one of the most highly anticipated matchups of the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League season. As expected, much of the spotlight is on Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Junior. However, German football legend Lothar Matthaus has taken aim at the Brazilian winger in the buildup, fiercely criticizing his on-pitch behavior.

A Clash of Titans in the Quarterfinals

With the Champions League quarterfinals kicking off this week, the showdown between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich feels like a matchup worthy of the final itself. It pits a Spanish powerhouse that relies on the individual brilliance of stars like Vinicius and Federico Valverde against a Bavarian squad famed for its relentless, high-intensity system.

While Vinicius possesses the world-class quality needed to tip the tie in Madrid’s favor, Matthaus chose to focus on the more controversial aspects of the Brazilian’s game.

“He Provokes Incessantly”

Speaking in his role as a pundit for Sky Sports Germany, the 65-year-old Bayern legend did not hold back when assessing Vinicius Junior’s character on the pitch.

“He is, of course, a great player, but he provokes incessantly,” Matthaus argued. “When someone puts in a proper tackle on him, all he does is complain and whine.”

Revisiting the Ballon d’Or Drama

Matthaus didn’t stop at criticizing Vinicius’s playing style; he also brought up the fallout from the 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony. During the gala in Paris, Manchester City’s Rodri took home the prestigious award over Vinicius, prompting the entire Real Madrid delegation to boycott the event in protest.

“Rodri was chosen and they said: ‘It’s unfair. One of ours should have won. We are boycotting it,'” Matthaus recalled. “You just don’t do that. Out of respect for the opponent, the other teams, and the other players.”

A Loss of Prestige for Real Madrid?

Wrapping up his fiery comments, Matthaus suggested that this persistent pattern of complaining—both from the players and the club itself—is damaging Real Madrid’s global standing in the sport.

“That is how a club that has achieved great things, which has a truly glorious history, loses prestige,” he stated bluntly. “I also don’t think Real Madrid’s behavior in recent years has been correct.”

The timing of Matthaus’s scathing remarks adds an extra layer of tension and drama to what is already guaranteed to be a thrilling Champions League encounter between two of Europe’s biggest clubs.
