AC Milan confirmed that Franco Baresi, one of the greatest defenders in football history, has passed away at the age of 66.
On the afternoon of July 31, AC Milan announced the sad news regarding Franco Baresi, the legend who spent his entire playing career with the red-and-black striped team, according to Reuters.
“AC Milan is in tears following the passing of Franco Baresi. His example and integrity will forever be etched in the DNA of the club, just like the legendary number 6 jersey,” the San Siro side wrote on social media.
AC Milan has not disclosed the cause of Baresi’s death. Since 2020, the former Italian star held the position of Honorary Vice President of the club.
In August 2025, Baresi underwent surgery to remove a lung nodule. Following the operation, he stated he needed additional time to recover his physical condition.
Baresi joined the AC Milan academy in 1974 and made his first-team debut four years later. He quickly became a vital anchor in defence before being awarded the captain’s armband at just 22 years old.
During 20 years of professional football, Baresi played exclusively for AC Milan. He made 719 appearances, winning 6 Serie A titles, 3 European Cups, 2 Intercontinental Cups, and numerous domestic trophies with the club.
After Baresi retired in 1997, AC Milan permanently retired the number 6 shirt in recognition of his contributions.
Alongside Paolo Maldini, Mauro Tassotti, and Alessandro Costacurta, Baresi formed one of the best defensive lines in European football history. He was the leader of the famous AC Milan squad under manager Arrigo Sacchi.
At the national level, Baresi earned 81 caps for Italy. He was part of the squad that won the 1982 World Cup, finished third at the 1990 World Cup, and wore the captain’s armband as the Azzurri reached the 1994 World Cup final.
His ability to read the game, leadership qualities, and elegant defensive style made Baresi an exemplary model for the libero position. He left a profound impact and inspired generations of defenders to come.
