On the evening of August 4, Neymar became the center of controversy after getting into a heated argument with Remo officials following Santos’ 1-0 away win in the Brazilian Cup.
A video shared by journalist Brenno Rayol quickly spread across social media. It shows the Brazilian forward arguing with home team officials and fans in the tunnel leading to the dressing rooms.
According to Brazilian media, the incident happened right after Santos beat Remo 1-0 to reach the Brazilian Cup quarter-finals. Neymar came on in the second half and provided the assist for Rony’s winning goal.
In the video, Neymar can be heard shouting “eliminado” (“eliminated”) several times at members of Remo’s board. The Santos forward also made several provocative gestures and strongly responded to insults from the other side. However, there is still no clear evidence showing who started the confrontation. The two groups were separated by a barrier, but the situation quickly became tense as several people joined the argument. Players, club staff, and security officers stepped in to stop the situation from getting worse.
Neymar’s reaction may have come after being provoked following the match. In South American football, heated arguments after emotional games are not uncommon.
On the other hand, Remo’s response was also very strong. Club president Antonio Carlos Teixeira publicly called Neymar “a scoundrel” and said the player should not have provoked the opponents after winning the match. He also criticized Neymar, saying that as an idol for many children, he should behave in a better way.
However, the Remo president’s strong personal attack on an opposing player also caused debate. Instead of calming the situation, his comments made the controversy grow even bigger in the Brazilian media.
The incident did not end in the tunnel. As Neymar left the stadium in his private car, Remo fans surrounded the vehicle and continued to provoke him. Security staff had to work hard to clear the crowd so Neymar could leave the stadium safely.
