Barcelona have taken the first step to sign Manchester City midfielder Rodri after reportedly receiving the player’s approval to join the club.
According to “Sport”, Barcelona have submitted an opening offer worth €45 million, plus €10 million in performance-related bonuses. However, Manchester City have turned down the proposal.
The Premier League club are still asking for €65 million, the same price they previously demanded from Real Madrid. Although City remain firm on that valuation, there is still room for further negotiations.
Rodri could also play an important role in the discussions. With only one year left on his current contract, the Spanish midfielder has a stronger position to influence his future.
Since Rodri has already given his approval to the move, Barcelona believe they can avoid a bidding war with other clubs.
During the early negotiations, Rodri’s representatives informed Barcelona that Manchester City wanted €65 million for the transfer.
Barcelona have already decided on their financial limit. The club are not willing to pay more than €50 million as a fixed fee. They are prepared to add bonuses that could increase the total value of the deal to nearly €60 million, which they believe is a fair price.
“Sport” reported: “The relationship between the two clubs is good, and both sides are expected to continue talks this weekend in the hope of reaching a final agreement.”
Regarding personal terms, Barcelona were already aware of Rodri’s salary expectations. The Spain international is currently one of Manchester City’s highest-paid players and had already received a contract renewal offer from the Premier League champions.
Barcelona have worked on a salary package that reportedly satisfies both sides, with an initial agreement in place for a four-year contract. If the clubs reach a final agreement in the next few days, Rodri could travel to Barcelona as early as next week to complete the move.
