Lionel Messi is back among the nominees at the age of 39.
Defending champion Ousmane Dembele has the chance to retain his crown.
Kylian Mbappe, Lamine Yamal, Harry Kane, Vinicius Jr and Erling Haaland are all included.
But some of the biggest names in world football are missing.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphinha and Pedri have all failed to make the 30-man shortlist.

Messi makes stunning Ballon d’Or return at 39
One of the biggest stories is the return of Lionel Messi.
The eight-time winner has been nominated for the Ballon d’Or for the 17th time in his extraordinary career.
Messi had been absent from the shortlist in both 2024 and 2025.
Now, at 39, he is back.
The Inter Miami superstar recorded an astonishing 45 goals and 30 assists across 49 matches during the evaluation period.
His return means one of the most successful players in Ballon d’Or history is once again officially in contention.
Cristiano Ronaldo misses out again
While Messi returns, Cristiano Ronaldo remains outside the shortlist.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has not been included among the 30 nominees.
Ronaldo’s last appearance on a Ballon d’Or shortlist came in 2022.
His omission is particularly striking because Saudi Arabian football has made history in this year’s nominations.
For the first time, players competing in the Saudi Pro League have been selected.
But Ronaldo is not one of them.
Sadio Mané makes history for Al-Nassr
Instead, Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr teammate Sadio Mané has been nominated.
The Senegalese forward is joined by Al-Qadsiah striker Julián Quiñones.
It is the first time the Saudi Pro League has been represented on a Ballon d’Or shortlist, and it immediately has two nominees.
That creates one of the most fascinating subplots of the entire announcement.
Saudi football has finally entered the Ballon d’Or conversation.
But its most famous player has been left out.
Raphinha surprisingly left out
Another major omission is Raphinha.
The Brazilian finished fifth in the 2025 Ballon d’Or voting but has failed to make the 30-player shortlist this time.
His absence is likely to generate significant debate, particularly among Barcelona supporters.
Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsí are among the Barcelona representatives included.
But Raphinha is not.
Pedri also misses the cut
Pedri is another Barcelona superstar who has been left outside the final 30.
The Spanish midfielder had been considered a serious contender for inclusion following another important season for club and country.

Paris Saint-Germain are once again the dominant club on the shortlist.
NINE players from PSG’s 2025/26 squad have been nominated.

Dembele gets chance to defend his crown
Among those PSG nominees is the reigning Ballon d’Or winner.
Ousmane Dembele won the award in 2025 and is officially back in contention to defend it.
His inclusion comes just hours after Dembele revealed his own leading candidates for this year’s prize.
Interestingly, he did not choose himself.
Dembele instead named Kvaratskhelia, Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe as his personal leading trio.
Lamine Yamal remains firmly in the race
Lamine Yamal is unsurprisingly among the nominees after another extraordinary campaign.
The Barcelona teenager produced 25 goals and 20 assists across 57 matches during the evaluation period.
More importantly, Yamal added a World Cup winners’ medal with Spain to his growing list of achievements.
He finished second in the 2025 Ballon d’Or standings.
Now he has another opportunity to go one step further.
Mbappe included after spectacular individual season
Kylian Mbappe also features among the 30 nominees.
The Real Madrid superstar registered 58 goals and 13 assists in 60 appearances during the evaluation period.
Despite Real Madrid failing to win a major trophy, Mbappe’s extraordinary individual numbers ensure he remains one of the headline candidates.
The French captain has already publicly admitted that if he possessed a Ballon d’Or vote, he would vote for himself.
Now the actual voters will make that judgement.
Harry Kane’s numbers are impossible to ignore
Harry Kane also enters the race following an extraordinary campaign with Bayern Munich.
The England captain scored 73 goals in 65 matches while helping Bayern win the Bundesliga, German Cup and German Super Cup.
Those numbers make Kane one of the most statistically dominant candidates on the shortlist.
Dembele has already singled him out as one of his personal favourites for the award.
Rodri returns after winning in 2024
Former Ballon d’Or winner Rodri is another major name returning to the shortlist.
The Spanish midfielder, who moved from Manchester City to Barcelona this summer, helped Spain win the World Cup.
Rodri won the Ballon d’Or in 2024 and is now officially back among the contenders two years later.
His nomination also contributes to Spain’s dominance of this year’s list.
Spain have more nominees than any other country
Spain are the most represented nation with six nominees.
France follow with five.
The Spanish contingent reflects their historic World Cup triumph and includes some of the country’s most influential performers.
The combination of international success and club performances could make Spanish players extremely difficult to overlook when voting begins.
Several first-time nominees make the list
The shortlist also contains several players receiving their first Ballon d’Or nomination.

The shortlist was always going to produce controversy because only 30 places were available.
This year, some extremely high-profile players have been sacrificed.
How the Ballon d’Or vote works
The shortlist is only the beginning of the process.
One journalist from each of the top 100 countries in the FIFA rankings will vote in the men’s Ballon d’Or.
Each voter selects ten players.
The players receive 15, 12, 10, 8, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points depending on their position on each ballot.
The award criteria prioritise individual performances, followed by collective achievements and trophies, then class and fair play.
Ballon d’Or winner to be crowned in London
The winner will be announced on October 26, 2026.
And for the first time, the ceremony will take place in London rather than Paris.
One of these 30 players will become the 70th winner of the men’s Ballon d’Or.
