Manchester United threw away a 2-0 lead against Brighton and saw two incredible Old Trafford records, lasting 50 and 42 years, come to an end in the same match.

Michael Carrick’s side raced into a 2-0 lead inside the opening 10 minutes, but Brighton produced a stunning comeback to knock United out of the competition.

And the defeat also ended two remarkable Old Trafford records.

One had survived for 50 years.

The other had stood for 42 years.

Man Utd throw away a 2-0 lead

United could hardly have asked for a better start.

Shea Lacey opened the scoring in the eighth minute before Mason Mount doubled the advantage just two minutes later.

After only 10 minutes, Man Utd were 2-0 ahead and appeared to be in complete control.

But Brighton refused to give up.

Charalampos Kostoulas pulled one back before half-time, giving the visitors hope.

Then the game completely changed in the second half.

Pascal Groß equalised before Maxim De Cuyper completed the comeback only a few minutes later.

United had gone from 2-0 up to 3-2 down.

A 50-year Old Trafford record ends

The first unwanted milestone came from the way United lost the match.

This was the first time since September 1976 that Manchester United lost a home game after leading by at least two goals.

The previous occasion came against Tottenham, when United also lost 3-2.

For almost 50 years, Old Trafford had been a place where a two-goal advantage was almost always enough.

During that long period, United played 145 home matches in which they had held a lead of at least two goals.

They won 143 of those games and drew the other two.

They did not lose a single one.

Until Brighton arrived.

Another 42-year record disappears

The second record may be just as shocking.

United still led 2-1 when the teams went into the dressing rooms at half-time.

Before this match, Man Utd had not lost at Old Trafford after leading at half-time since 1984.

That unbeaten run covered 550 home matches.

United won 498 of them and drew 52.

Again, there had been no defeats.

Brighton became the first team in 42 years to change that.

Two historic runs end in the same match

The numbers make the defeat even more painful for United supporters.

50 years without losing at home after leading by two goals.

42 years without losing at home after leading at half-time.

Both runs ended on the same night.

And both ended after United had looked completely in control during the opening stages.

From 2-0 up to elimination

The most worrying part for Carrick may be how quickly the match changed.

United scored twice in the opening 10 minutes.

Brighton then scored three unanswered goals.

Groß made it 2-2 in the 65th minute before De Cuyper completed the comeback in the 69th.

In only a few minutes, United’s place in the next round disappeared.

The result also brought more questions about the team’s ability to control matches when they are ahead.

Carrick admits the collapse was unacceptable

Michael Carrick did not hide his frustration after the final whistle.

The United boss admitted that the way his team lost control of the game was not acceptable.

He made it clear that United must quickly return to winning matches.

The defeat comes during a difficult start to the season, increasing the pressure around Old Trafford.

Brighton create another painful memory for United

Brighton have caused Manchester United problems several times in recent seasons.

But this victory will stand out because of the history attached to it.

They did not simply eliminate United from the Carabao Cup.

They also became the team that ended two of Old Trafford’s longest unbeaten records in one night.

A defeat that will be remembered for the wrong reasons

Manchester United have suffered many painful defeats over the years.

But few have produced two such unusual statistics at the same time.

United led 2-0.

They led at half-time.

They still lost 3-2.

And in doing so, they lost two remarkable records that had survived for decades.

For Carrick and his players, the challenge now is to make sure this historic collapse does not become the start of an even bigger problem.
