Virgil van Dijk was involved in a heated exchange with a Dutch journalist after finally responding to strong criticism aimed at him following the Netherlands’ World Cup exit.
The Liverpool defender confronted Valentijn Driessen during a Netherlands press conference after months of criticism surrounding the national team’s disappointing tournament.
The conversation quickly became so tense that a KNVB press officer eventually stepped in to end the argument.
Van Dijk criticised after World Cup exit
The controversy began after the Netherlands were knocked out of the 2026 World Cup by Morocco in the round of 32.
Ronald Koeman and several senior players were heavily criticised after the defeat.
Driessen was among the strongest critics.
He previously accused Van Dijk and the Dutch team of betraying what the national side traditionally represents.
He also questioned the role Van Dijk played in the tactical decisions before the Morocco match.
Van Dijk denies five-man defence claim
One of the biggest accusations was that Van Dijk and Ruud van Nistelrooy had pushed the Netherlands to change to a five-man defence.
Van Dijk strongly rejected that version of events.
He described the claim as “complete nonsense” and insisted tactical decisions belonged to the coaching staff.

New Netherlands coach Xavi Hernández has kept the Liverpool defender in his plans.
