Barcelona legend Gary Lineker has compared Cristiano Ronaldo’s difficult situation with Portugal to Lionel Messi’s emotional Argentina farewell, saying the Portuguese legend also deserves a beautiful ending.
Gary Lineker Delivers Painful Ronaldo Verdict After Messi’s Emotional Farewell
Cristiano Ronaldo has received a painful assessment from football legend Gary Lineker after Lionel Messi ended his Argentina career with an emotional farewell.
Messi recently played his final match for Argentina in front of more than 85,000 supporters at the Monumental.
The legendary forward scored once and provided two assists as Argentina defeated Benin 3-0.
While Messi’s international career ended with celebration and emotion, Ronaldo’s current situation with Portugal looks very different.
Lineker admits he feels sad for Ronaldo
Speaking after the Leaders Week event at Stamford Bridge, Lineker admitted that Ronaldo’s current situation makes him feel sad.
The former England striker believes Ronaldo has had one of the greatest careers in football history and deserves to be remembered for everything he achieved.
But Lineker suggested the way Ronaldo’s international story is currently developing is difficult to watch.
He said that in a few years, people will probably remember Ronaldo’s incredible career more than the controversy surrounding him now.
Messi farewell becomes the comparison
Lineker then directly compared Ronaldo’s situation with Messi’s goodbye to Argentina.
He described Messi’s farewell as beautiful and said Ronaldo deserves something similar.
For Lineker, a player with Ronaldo’s achievements should have the chance to end his international career with respect and celebration.
The comparison has attracted attention because Messi and Ronaldo have been linked throughout their careers as two of the greatest players of their generation.
Messi gets emotional goodbye
Messi’s final Argentina appearance was carefully prepared as a special occasion.
The Monumental was packed with supporters who came to celebrate more than two decades of international football.
Messi responded with another strong performance, scoring once and assisting twice in the 3-0 victory over Benin.
The night gave Argentina supporters the chance to say goodbye to their captain in emotional and memorable fashion.
Ronaldo situation looks very different
Ronaldo, meanwhile, is currently involved in a major controversy with the Portugal national team.
The forward left the national team camp following a dispute involving head coach Jorge Jesus.
He later publicly explained his decision and apologised for leaving the squad.
Ronaldo has also accepted that his actions could lead to disciplinary consequences.
The situation has created uncertainty over whether and when he will represent Portugal again.
Ronaldo has not retired from Portugal
There is an important difference between Ronaldo and Messi.
Ronaldo has not announced his retirement from international football.
The Portugal captain has left the door open to a possible return if he remains physically ready and continues performing at a high level.
That means the current controversy does not necessarily represent the final chapter of his Portugal career.
Lineker believes Ronaldo deserves better ending
Lineker’s comments were not a strong attack on Ronaldo.
Instead, they showed regret that such a legendary career could potentially finish in controversy.
Ronaldo has represented Portugal for more than two decades and has broken numerous international records.
He also helped his country win major trophies and became one of the most important players in Portuguese football history.
For Lineker, that career deserves a proper farewell rather than an ending dominated by conflict.
Pressure grows around Ronaldo future
The comments come at a difficult moment for Ronaldo.
His relationship with the national team has become one of the biggest stories in Portuguese football.
There are questions over possible disciplinary action, his relationship with Jorge Jesus and whether he will return for future international matches.
At the same time, Messi’s emotional farewell has created an unavoidable comparison between the two superstars.
Ronaldo ending still not decided
For now, Ronaldo’s international story remains unfinished.
He could still return to Portugal and eventually receive the type of farewell Lineker believes he deserves.
But the contrast with Messi has made the current situation even more emotional.
Messi left Argentina surrounded by celebration, while Ronaldo is currently fighting to make sure his Portugal career does not end in controversy.
