FIFA President Gianni Infantino praised the professionalism of the Argentina national team in a reportedly leaked letter, despite the controversies following the 2026 World Cup final.
The Argentina national team lost to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final after Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in extra time. However, what unfolded after the final whistle became the main focus of attention, as several members of the South American squad and coaching staff engaged in both verbal and physical altercations with the Spanish side.
Leandro Paredes was caught on camera grabbing Eric Garcia by the neck and wrestling Gavi to the ground. Meanwhile, Nahuel Molina appeared to direct a punch toward “La Roja” captain Rodri. Most members of the Argentina squad also turned their backs as Rodri hoisted the trophy.
FIFA subsequently opened an investigation into the aforementioned incidents. A petition calling for Argentina to be banned from future international competitions reportedly gathered more than 23 million signatures.
In response, Argentine fans launched another petition demanding a replay of the final and accusing referee Slavko Vinčić of unethical conduct. However, there is currently no evidence showing that FIFA or the match official accepted bribes or were involved in manipulation. Argentine Football Association President Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia has also urged supporters to accept Spain’s victory.
Amid the ongoing investigation, a letter reportedly sent by FIFA President Gianni Infantino to the Argentine Football Association was unexpectedly leaked. The contents were initially published by Argentine media before being verified by the Daily Mail. In the letter, Mr. Infantino wrote: “Dear Mr. President, yesterday, Sunday 19 July 2026, at the magnificent New York New Jersey Stadium, Argentina earned the silver medal at the World Cup 2026 following an exciting final against Spain.
I would like once again to extend my most sincere congratulations on this significant new achievement for Argentine football. The magnificent performance of the Albiceleste contributed decisively to making the tournament an extraordinary event that captivated millions of football lovers around the world.”
The FIFA President also extended congratulations to the players, head coach Lionel Scaloni, the coaching and medical staff, and the Argentine supporters.
He emphasized: “These successes are always the result of hard work, professionalism and attention to detail, as well as the passion, dedication and love for this wonderful sport.”
Infantino’s praise of Argentina’s “professionalism” makes the letter particularly noteworthy, as FIFA is still reviewing the controversial conduct following the final. Nevertheless, the content of the letter is primarily ceremonial, focusing on recognizing the journey of manager Scaloni and his team to securing the runner-up spot.
