Kylian Mbappe speaks out on Real Madrid duo after fresh criticism

Kylian Mbappe has spoken openly about Vinicius Jr, rejecting claims that the pair cannot play together and questioning why they are repeatedly singled out over Real Madrid’s defensive problems.

Mbappe defends Vinicius and responds to Real Madrid’s defensive criticism

Kylian Mbappe has directly addressed his relationship with Vinicius Jr and pushed back against fresh criticism of Real Madrid’s superstar attacking duo.

The French captain was questioned about whether he and Vinicius can truly function together and whether the pair need to contribute more defensively.

Mbappe did not avoid either issue.

Instead, he made it clear that he believes both players share the same objective and should not be treated as the only reason for Madrid’s problems without the ball.

Mbappe rejects claims he cannot play with Vinicius

Questions over the compatibility between Mbappe and Vinicius have followed Real Madrid since the Frenchman arrived in Spain.

Both players naturally prefer attacking from the left side and both are among the biggest personalities in the squad.

However, Mbappe insisted that the pair are completely aligned when it comes to Real Madrid’s most important objective.

“We have the same goal, and that’s to help Real Madrid win matches and titles,” Mbappe said.

For him, the constant outside discussion about whether the partnership works is largely irrelevant.

Mbappe says outside debate is what ‘sells’

Mbappe also suggested that the constant focus on relationships between Real Madrid’s biggest stars is partly driven by the attention such stories generate.

He argued that discussions about whether he, Vinicius or Jude Bellingham can coexist are exactly the kind of stories people enjoy and the media know will attract interest.

The striker made it clear that he cannot control every opinion surrounding the club.

His focus is on making sure the players on the pitch function together well enough to win.

‘Only me and Vinicius?’

The strongest moment came when Mbappe was asked whether he and Vinicius need to improve their defensive contribution.

The question referenced players such as Raphinha and Ousmane Dembélé, who have often been praised for their intensity without the ball.

Mbappe immediately responded by asking: “Is it just Vini Jr. and me, or the whole team?”

The reaction made his frustration clear.

He did not deny that he and Vinicius can improve, but questioned why the responsibility was being placed so heavily on two attacking players.

Mbappe admits defensive improvement is needed

Despite his response, Mbappe did acknowledge an important point.

He admitted that he personally needs to improve defensively and that Real Madrid as a team must also become better without the ball.

The Frenchman said the team need to improve in several areas, including defending, controlling possession and creating chances.

That distinction is important.

Mbappe was not refusing defensive responsibility.

He was questioning why the discussion appeared to focus almost exclusively on himself and Vinicius.

Mbappe hits back with goals argument

Mbappe also responded to comparisons with Raphinha and Dembélé by pointing out that different players offer different strengths.

He suggested that if he were judged against those players purely on defensive work, he could just as easily respond by asking why they do not score as many goals as he does.

Mbappe then made clear that he did not actually want to judge players that way.

His broader argument was that footballers should not be evaluated through one statistic or one tactical responsibility alone.

Some contribute more through pressing.

Others provide greater goalscoring output.

No sign of Mbappe attacking Vinicius

The comments have created headlines, but there is an important clarification.

Mbappe did not criticise Vinicius at any point.

In fact, much of his answer effectively defended the Brazilian.

He rejected suggestions that they cannot play together and then questioned why both players were being singled out for Madrid’s defensive shortcomings.

The message was much closer to defending the partnership than attacking it.

Real Madrid defeat brings old questions back

The timing of the discussion is significant.

Real Madrid recently suffered their first defeat of the season under José Mourinho, reopening familiar debates about the balance of the team.

Whenever Madrid struggle, one of the first questions is whether a side containing both Mbappe and Vinicius can press and defend with enough intensity.

The pair are devastating when Madrid attack space, but neither is naturally known for producing relentless defensive work across 90 minutes.

That has made their partnership one of the most closely analysed tactical relationships in world football.

Pressure remains on Madrid’s superstar duo

Mbappe’s comments may calm suggestions of a personal problem between the two players, but they will not end the wider tactical debate.

The challenge for Real Madrid is finding a system that allows both Mbappe and Vinicius to maximise their attacking qualities without leaving the team vulnerable elsewhere.

Mbappe clearly believes the responsibility for achieving that balance belongs to the entire team.

And his message regarding Vinicius could hardly have been clearer.

They share the same goal.

Win matches. Win titles.

Everything else, according to Mbappe, is outside noise.
