Man United set sad record after shock Hull defeat

Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat to Hull City produced a series of unwanted records. The Red Devils lost a league opener to newly promoted opposition for the first time in their history and have now failed to score from 43 shots across their last two Premier League opening matches.

Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat to newly promoted Hull City produced unwanted history and exposed serious problems at both ends of the pitch.

According to Opta, United lost an opening league match against newly promoted opposition for the first time in the club’s history.

They also took 43 shots across their last two Premier League opening matches without scoring.

Against Hull, Michael Carrick’s side dominated possession, created 21 attempts and recorded 1.81 expected goals. They also delivered 34 open-play crosses into the box.

Yet they left the MKM Stadium with nothing.

Manchester United make unwanted history against Hull

Before Saturday, United had faced newly promoted opposition on the opening day 13 times, winning 10 and drawing three. Hull ended that unbeaten record.

United’s historical record now reads 14 opening league matches against promoted opposition, 10 wins, three draws and one defeat.

It was a result no previous Manchester United team had suffered.

43 shots and still no opening-day goal

The attacking statistics are equally concerning.

United attempted 22 shots in last season’s opener against Arsenal and failed to score. They produced another 21 against Hull.

That is 43 shots across two Premier League opening matches, with zero goals.

The figure highlights the difference between controlling territory and creating decisive chances. United were willing to shoot, but too many attempts lacked the quality needed to trouble Hull consistently.

United lose consecutive Premier League openers

The Hull defeat means United have lost their Premier League opener in consecutive seasons, following last season’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal.

Opta also shows that the Red Devils have now lost their first Premier League match in four of the last seven seasons.

For a club historically associated with strong starts, that recent pattern is difficult to ignore.

71.6 percent possession produced nothing

Hull may have won comfortably, but United controlled most of the ball.

Manchester United had 71.6 percent possession, their highest figure in a Premier League match since September 2023, when they had 77 percent in a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.

The similarity was obvious: United controlled possession and territory but failed to score.

Against Hull, their dominance became increasingly predictable. The home side defended compactly, protected the central areas and allowed United to circulate the ball in less dangerous positions.

21 shots, five on target and 1.81 xG

United finished with 21 attempts, five on target and 1.81 expected goals.

However, Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis was rarely forced into spectacular saves.

United generated volume without generating enough quality.

Shots, possession and crosses continued to rise, but the goals never came.

34 open-play crosses underline United’s lack of ideas

As Hull closed the central spaces, United repeatedly moved the ball into wide areas.

By full-time, they had attempted 34 open-play crosses, their highest total in a Premier League match for almost eight years, according to Opta.

The number reflected how predictable United became. Crossing was increasingly used as the default solution, but Hull were comfortable defending those deliveries.

Hull punished United’s set-piece weakness

While United struggled to turn possession into goals, Hull exploited their vulnerability from dead-ball situations.

Semi Ajayi opened the scoring in the 17th minute after United failed to deal with a corner. Nobel Mendy then doubled the lead in the 38th minute from Regan Slater’s free-kick.

Both Hull goals came from set-pieces.

Opta noted that United have conceded six Premier League goals from corners since Carrick’s first match back in charge, with only four teams conceding more during that period.

Hull identified the weakness and punished it twice before half-time.

Hull create history of their own

Hull had never beaten Manchester United in the Premier League before Saturday. Their previous 10 meetings had produced two draws and eight defeats.

Hull have now recorded their first Premier League victory over United.

It was also their first league win against the Red Devils since November 1974, when the clubs were competing in the second tier.

For Hull, the victory ended a wait of more than half a century. For United, it made the defeat even harder to dismiss as an ordinary opening-day setback.

The result looks worse after United’s strong 2026 form

United entered the campaign with genuine optimism after an impressive resurgence under Carrick.

Before Matchday 1, Opta noted that Manchester United had collected more Premier League points during the 2026 calendar year than any other side. They had also scored the most league goals during that period and lost only twice.

That form raised expectations around Old Trafford.

Instead of merely hoping to improve, United were expected to compete near the top. Hull’s victory therefore represented a major statistical upset.

Opta heavily favoured United before kick-off

Opta’s supercomputer gave Manchester United a 68.1 percent probability of victory before the match, while Hull’s winning probability stood at only 12.9 percent.

The promoted side ignored those predictions by defending with discipline, attacking United’s weaknesses and taking their chances.

The favourites produced the possession and attempts.

The underdogs produced the goals.

Possession without penetration is the biggest concern

The match statistics tell a clear story:

71.6 percent possession.

21 shots.

Five shots on target.

1.81 xG.

34 open-play crosses.

No goals.

United reached Hull’s defensive third regularly but struggled to move defenders out of position. Once the central route became crowded, attacks shifted towards the wings and crossing became the default option.

Hull were ready for it.

The set-piece problem cannot be ignored

United’s attacking inefficiency was only half the problem. Their defensive organisation at set-pieces proved decisive.

Hull did not need more possession or a high number of attempts. They simply executed their best opportunities.

A team hoping to challenge near the top cannot continue conceding cheap goals from corners and free-kicks. Carrick must address that issue quickly.

The 43-shot statistic should worry Carrick

One poor result can be dismissed over a 38-match season. The underlying trends are harder to ignore.

Against Arsenal, United created 22 attempts without scoring. Against Hull, they created 21 and failed again.

Hull 2-0 Manchester United: Report, result and goals as Red Devils beaten on opening weekend

Forty-three shots without a goal across consecutive Premier League opening fixtures is a clear sign of wasted attacking volume.

Not all 43 attempts were high-quality chances, which is precisely the concern. If United continue producing shots without creating enough clear opportunities, possession and attempt totals will offer little comfort.

Carrick now faces an immediate reality check

United entered the season with renewed belief. Carrick had overseen improvement, the squad had been strengthened, Champions League football had returned and a third-place finish had raised expectations.

One match does not define a season.

But Hull exposed two problems that cannot be ignored: United must become more dangerous with the ball and far more reliable when defending set-pieces.

A historic defeat United will want to forget quickly

Until Saturday, Manchester United had never lost their opening league fixture to a newly promoted opponent.

Hull have now changed that.

The wider numbers make the result even more uncomfortable:

First opening-day league defeat to a newly promoted team in club history.

Four defeats in the last seven Premier League opening matches.

Forty-three shots without a goal across the last two Premier League openers.

71.6 percent possession against Hull with nothing to show for it.

34 open-play crosses, their most in a Premier League match for almost eight years.

Two goals conceded from set-pieces.

The season is only one match old, so United have time to recover.

But their first 90 minutes have already produced a piece of history nobody at Old Trafford wanted.

Hull did not simply beat Manchester United. They exposed one of the most statistically brutal opening days in the club’s history.
