Shea Lacey is exciting Manchester United fans following a promising performance against Atletico Madrid. The 19-year-old talent is expected to become a special breakout star for the “Red Devils” next season.
Manchester United continued their preparations for the new season with a 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid. Bryan Mbeumo scored both goals, helping the Old Trafford side complete a successful second-half comeback. However, Shea Lacey was the name that drew the most attention from fans.
Deployed on the right flank, the MU academy graduate continuously cut inside with his skillful left foot. Moving into the second half, Lacey operated closer to the central area and won the penalty that led to the equalizer. The young English talent used his technical flair to beat his marker before being brought down by a late challenge.
According to Statman Dave, Lacey had 30 touches, achieved a 100% crossing accuracy rate, successfully completed two dribbles, and made four passes in the final third. He also recorded seven ball recoveries, demonstrating his active participation in pressing and defensive support.
His close control, rapid changes of direction, and expressive left foot have led a section of supporters to liken Lacey to “MU’s Lionel Messi”. While this is mostly a way for fans to express their excitement, the 19-year-old’s technical qualities genuinely generate high expectations.

Shea Lacey is expected to be a “breath of fresh air” in MU’s attack. Lacey made his first-team debut in a 1-2 defeat to Aston Villa back in December and made a total of four appearances last season. During the current pre-season preparations, the England U20 international has continued to make an impression, highlighted by opening the scoring in a 5-0 victory over Rosenborg.
According to the BBC, Lacey tops the list of academy talents likely to be handed opportunities. MU has no plans to send him out on loan. Lacey alongside Tyler Fletcher, son of former midfielder Darren Fletcher, will continue training and competing for a first-team spot.
Returning to European competition requires MU to have greater squad depth. Lacey could be utilized when Bruno Fernandes or Mason Mount need a rest, while serving as a rotation option for Mbeumo and Amad Diallo on the right wing.
