For more than two decades, football fans have wondered when Lionel Messi’s extraordinary career would finally come to an end.
Now, for perhaps the first time, Messi himself appears unsure how much longer he wants to continue.
The 39-year-old has raised serious doubts over his playing future following the death of his father, Jorge Messi, who passed away at the age of 68 after a long illness. In an emotional tribute to his father, Messi admitted that football suddenly feels very different without the man who had been beside him almost every step of the way.
“I only played football and now I have quite a few doubts” about continuing for much longer, Messi wrote.
It is not a retirement announcement.
But it may be the clearest indication yet that the final chapter of Lionel Messi’s career is approaching.
His father had been there from the beginning
Jorge Messi was far more than the father of one of football’s greatest players.
He had been a central figure throughout Lionel’s career, helping guide him from Rosario to Barcelona and later serving for years as his representative. Messi described Jorge as a father, friend and agent, someone whose presence had been almost constant throughout his journey in football.
That absence was particularly painful during the 2026 World Cup.
Messi revealed that his father had encouraged him to play in the tournament even as his health deteriorated. It became the first major tournament Jorge was unable to attend. After matches, Messi would still find himself waiting for the message from his father that had become part of their routine over the years.
Messi eventually produced another remarkable World Cup at the age of 39, scoring eight goals and helping Argentina reach a second consecutive final. But their attempt to defend the trophy ended with a 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain.
Only now has the full emotional weight of that tournament become clearer.
Messi said he wanted to win another World Cup for his father, but by the final his body had reached its limit. He admitted that he tried to push beyond what he was physically capable of doing, but could not.
Is Messi really considering retirement?
There is an important distinction.
Messi has not announced that he is retiring, either from Argentina or from club football.
But his latest words are significantly different from the usual speculation surrounding an ageing superstar.
Just days earlier, Argentine Football Association president Claudio Tapia said the decision over when Messi retires belongs entirely to the player. Even after the World Cup, there had been no clear indication of when Messi planned to end his international career or how much longer he intended to remain with Inter Miami.
Now there is uncertainty coming directly from Messi himself.
And it appears to be about more than age, fitness or football.
For much of Messi’s life, football and family have been inseparable. His father was there when the journey began, through Barcelona, the Ballon d’Ors, the painful defeats with Argentina, the Copa América breakthrough and finally the World Cup triumph in Qatar.
Messi’s latest message suggests that losing that constant presence has forced him to look at his career differently.
Football may be approaching a moment it has tried to ignore
Messi turned 39 in June, yet his performance at the 2026 World Cup showed that his ability had not simply disappeared with age. He still recorded eight goals and four assists as Argentina came within one match of retaining the biggest trophy in football.
That is what makes the situation so unusual.
If the end does come soon, it may not be because Messi can no longer play.
It may simply be because, after achieving almost everything football can offer and after losing one of the most important people behind that journey, he feels the time is right to stop.
There is no retirement date. There is no official farewell. And there may still be plenty of Lionel Messi left to watch.
But for the first time in a long time, the question is no longer just whether football is ready to say goodbye to Messi.
It is whether Messi himself is beginning to feel ready to say goodbye to football.
