Ronaldo announced his retirement on November 5, ending an incredible 23-year career with Portugal.
Just one day later, head coach Jorge Jesus revealed the new leadership structure.
Bernardo Silva will become Portugal’s new captain, taking over the famous armband from Cristiano Ronaldo.
Bernardo Silva officially replaces Ronaldo
During a press conference on November 6, Jorge Jesus explained how Portugal select their national team captain.
The experienced coach confirmed that the decision is based on the number of international appearances rather than his personal preference.
With 115 appearances, Bernardo Silva is now the most experienced player in Portugal’s squad and will take over the captaincy.

Jesus praised the 32-year-old midfielder for his experience, quality and leadership.
The manager believes Bernardo has everything needed to guide Portugal into a new era.
Bruno Fernandes misses out on top captaincy role
One of the most interesting details involves Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes.
Despite being one of Portugal’s most important players, Bruno has not been selected as the first-choice captain.
Bernardo Silva leads with 115 international appearances, followed by Bruno Fernandes with 97 and Rúben Dias with 84.

However, Bruno remains part of Portugal’s five-man leadership group.
The group also includes Rúben Dias, João Cancelo and Rúben Neves.
Jorge Jesus made it clear that the decision follows Portugal’s traditional rule rather than a personal choice against Bruno.
Portugal begin a new era without Ronaldo
Ronaldo’s departure marks a historic moment for Portuguese football.
The former Real Madrid superstar leaves behind 234 international appearances, 146 goals, the EURO 2016 title and two UEFA Nations League trophies.

Meanwhile, Jorge Jesus has introduced seven new players as Portugal prepare for their upcoming Nations League matches against Denmark and Wales.
With Bernardo Silva now leading the team, Portugal are preparing for their first major challenge without Cristiano Ronaldo as captain.
