OFFICIAL: Ronaldo automatically suspended by Portugal as new punishment details emerge

Cristiano Ronaldo is considered automatically suspended from Portugal after leaving the national team camp, but new disciplinary details suggest his final punishment could be reduced.

Ronaldo automatically suspended by Portugal as new punishment details emerge

Cristiano Ronaldo is already considered suspended from representing Portugal as the disciplinary process following his dramatic departure from the national team camp continues.

2010

According to sports lawyer Gonçalo Almeida, Ronaldo’s decision to leave the Portugal camp automatically triggered a preventive suspension under Portuguese Football Federation regulations.

However, this is not yet his final punishment.

Ronaldo under automatic suspension

Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp following his dispute with national team coach Jorge Jesus.

He later publicly confirmed that he had decided to leave.

Under FPF disciplinary regulations, a player who leaves a national team activity without acceptable justification can face disciplinary action.

The same rule also creates an automatic preventive suspension while the case is being examined.

Final punishment not decided

The FPF Disciplinary Council must still consider the case and give Ronaldo the opportunity to present his defence.

No final suspension has yet been announced.

That means reports claiming Ronaldo has already received a long-term ban are premature.

Up to six months possible

According to the regulations cited by A BOLA, Ronaldo could face a suspension of between one and six months.

He could also receive a financial penalty between €510 and €1,020.

Because Ronaldo publicly admitted leaving the camp, some form of punishment may be difficult to avoid.

But that admission could also help him receive a smaller sanction.

Rule could cut punishment in half

Another FPF regulation allows the punishment limits to be reduced if a player fully admits the facts and that confession is accepted.

Ronaldo has already publicly confirmed his decision to leave the national team camp.

That could potentially reduce both the minimum and maximum punishment by half.

In the most favourable scenario, a minimum one-month suspension could fall to around 15 days.

Ronaldo accepts responsibility

Ronaldo has also made clear that he does not expect special treatment.

The Portugal captain said his position gives him even greater responsibility and acknowledged that his actions could have consequences.

He apologised but also accepted the possibility of disciplinary action.

Can teammates help Ronaldo?

Reports have suggested Ronaldo could ask teammates to support his defence.

However, there is no confirmed rule saying he must rely on players such as Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva or Rúben Dias to receive a reduced punishment.

Ronaldo does have the right to call witnesses, but the possible reduction is mainly linked to his admission of the facts.

He has already mentioned Simão Coutinho and Tiago Craveiro as people who could support parts of his version of events.

Could Ronaldo return in November?

Portugal are due to face Denmark on November 14 and Wales three days later.

There is still a realistic possibility Ronaldo could be available.

The time already served under his preventive suspension can count toward the final punishment.

If Ronaldo receives a short sanction, it could be completed before Portugal’s next international window.

FPF decision now crucial

Ronaldo is currently considered automatically suspended, but his final punishment has not yet been decided.

A one-to-six-month ban remains possible, although his public admission could significantly reduce the final sanction.

The next major step will be the decision of the FPF Disciplinary Council, which could determine when Ronaldo is able to represent Portugal again.
