Nicolás Otamendi took Argentina’s loss in the 2026 World Cup Final poorly. After being defeated by a Spanish team that clearly dominated the Albiceleste, the Argentine center-back confronted Rodri regarding the statements Aymeric Laporte had given to MARCA prior to the match.
“Keep your mouth shut, idiot. You lot spent the entire week whining,” Otamendi snapped at Rodri when the Spanish midfielder walked over to shake hands following the whistle. “You did nothing but cry all week. Both you and Laporte. That is no way to behave. You were complaining to the officials all week long, my friend.”
A bewildered Rodri questioned what he meant, to which the Argentine defender replied: “Laporte? Did you miss what he said this week?”
The Ballon d’Or recipient walked away looking completely shocked by Otamendi’s angry outburst. The Argentine defender, well-known for his aggressive demeanor and provocative on-field presence, seemed highly agitated by Laporte’s interview published in MARCA ahead of the final.
“I am not at all troubled by aggressive play as long as it fits within the boundaries of football. If the official does their job properly, I don’t mind it. However, it is true that we have noticed some surprising incidents in recent games, moments that were left unpunished. This is especially true of Argentina, a side that frequently delivers hidden messages through their challenges. That has no place in football, particularly in a competition of this scale, because it can disrupt your focus and cause you to lose your temper.”
Laporte continued: “The referee needs to manage those instances so the game remains under control. If a few players are permitted to act without consequences, the match will slide into chaos. From the very start of this tournament, we have maintained a highly disciplined approach. We do not go around hacking at opponents or executing dangerous challenges, and that is the exact mindset we must bring to this game. Of course, a great deal will rely on the refereeing.”
