After Portugal was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup, Cristiano Ronaldo shared emotional thoughts, even leaving open the possibility that this could also be the last time he wears the national team shirt.
Speaking in the mixed zone after the match, the Portugal captain said: “Tomorrow, I will wake up with the same mindset as today: a clear conscience. I have dedicated 23 years to the national team and won 3 titles. Before Cristiano’s era, Portugal had never won any tournament.”
Ronaldo also affirmed that the EURO 2016 championship remains the pinnacle of his international career. “EURO is the most important title. Honestly, to me, the 2016 championship is worth as much as a World Cup championship.”
However, when asked directly whether he would part ways with the Portugal national team, the 41-year-old superstar said he did not want to make any decision yet. “I will not make a decision when there are still too many emotions. Right now, whether I continue or not is not the important thing.”
Ronaldo also paid tribute to manager Roberto MartÃnez, while refusing to comment on the possibility of Jorge Jesus replacing the Spanish strategist. “I really enjoyed working with manager Roberto. He is a wonderful human being and also an excellent manager. He brought home a title for Portugal and I will never forget that. I am very grateful for what he has contributed to Portuguese football.”
When asked about Jorge Jesus, Ronaldo replied: “This is not the time to talk about the person who will come and that is also none of my business. Those with responsibility will be the ones to make the decision.”
