According to statistics published by the AP before the match, no team in history had ever won the World Cup championship with more than one teenage player in the starting lineup in the final. The victory over Argentina has therefore helped Spain officially establish an unprecedented record.
Prior to Yamal and Cubarsí, only a handful of players under the age of 20 had ever started and lifted the trophy in the final match. Prominent cases include Pelé with Brazil in 1958, Giuseppe Bergomi in the shirt of Italy in 1982, and Kylian Mbappé with the France national team in 2018. However, each team back then had only one teenage player in the starting lineup.
The special thing is that Yamal and Cubarsí did not appear in the Spain lineup just to create a symbolic milestone. Both held vital roles in De la Fuente’s system throughout the journey at the 2026 World Cup.
Cubarsí brought ball-distribution ability and composure to the center of the defense. Up front, Yamal continuously created pressure with speed, technique, and dribbling situations from the right flank. Before the final match, FIFA recorded Yamal as the player with the most successful dribbles in the tournament with 30 times.
Both players matured through Barcelona’s youth system and were once given their first-team debut opportunities by coach Xavi Hernández while still in their teens.
