Neymar brutally left out of Santos squad for questionable reason

Santos are just 90 minutes away from reaching the Copa Sudamericana quarter-finals.

They hold only a one-goal advantage. They are travelling to one of the most difficult environments in South American football. And yet, their biggest star will not even make the trip.

Neymar has been left out of Santos’ squad for Thursday’s decisive second leg against Macará in Ecuador.

The Brazilian club named a 21-man travelling squad for the round-of-16 tie, with both Neymar and Gabigol among several senior players being rested.

It is a calculated gamble from manager Cuca as Santos attempt to balance their continental ambitions with an increasingly demanding domestic schedule.

Why is Neymar not playing against Macará?

There is no new injury behind Neymar’s absence.

Instead, Santos have chosen to protect the 34-year-old after a demanding run of matches.

Neymar recently completed the full 90 minutes in two consecutive games, first against Macará in the opening leg of the Copa Sudamericana tie and then against Vasco da Gama in the Brazilian Serie A.

That amounts to 180 minutes in a matter of days for a player whose workload has been carefully managed following years of injury problems.

With several important fixtures approaching, Santos have decided that another physically demanding trip is not worth the risk.

Gabigol, Igor Vinicius and Álvaro Barreal have also been rested.

This is far from a meaningless game

The decision is particularly striking because Santos have not yet secured their place in the next round.

The Brazilian side won the first leg 2-1 at Vila Belmiro, meaning a draw in Ecuador would be enough to send them into the Copa Sudamericana quarter-finals.

But there is little margin for error.

A one-goal defeat would wipe out their advantage and potentially send the tie into extra time, while a defeat by two or more goals would eliminate Santos completely.

Neymar played an important role in establishing that first-leg advantage, creating Gabigol’s equaliser before his corner led to Willian Arão’s winning goal.

Now Santos must defend that lead without him.

Then there is the altitude

The location of the second leg makes Santos’ decision even more interesting.

Macará play their home games at Estadio Bellavista in Ambato, a city located approximately 2,600 metres above sea level.

Altitude can create a significant physical challenge for visiting teams that are not accustomed to playing in those conditions.

And Santos’ historical record does little to ease those concerns.

Across 25 matches played at altitude in continental competitions during the 21st century, Santos have recorded only five victories, six draws and 14 defeats, collecting just 28% of the available points.

The journey itself is also demanding.

The Santos squad must first complete a flight of around six hours to Quito before travelling for almost another three hours by bus to Ambato.

Neymar will avoid all of that and instead remain in Brazil working at the club’s CT Rei Pelé training centre.

Santos have bigger battles coming

Cuca’s decision becomes easier to understand when looking at what comes next.

Santos return to Brazilian Serie A action against Mirassol just days after the trip to Ecuador.

That is followed by a demanding sequence featuring three major matches: two Copa do Brasil quarter-final clashes against Palmeiras and a league meeting with Corinthians.

The Brazilian championship is particularly important for Santos, who have spent much of the season fighting near the bottom of the table.

The club recently secured an important 3-0 victory away to Vasco to move out of the relegation zone, and preserving their key players for the domestic battle has become a major consideration.

At the same time, the Copa Sudamericana remains far from irrelevant.

Reaching the quarter-finals would bring Santos another $700,000 in prize money, a significant amount for a club currently dealing with financial difficulties.

That leaves Cuca attempting to manage two competing priorities at once.

A gamble Santos believe they can afford

Leaving Neymar at home for a knockout match could easily be interpreted as Santos underestimating their opponents.

But the reality is more complicated.

Neymar’s availability has become one of Santos’ most valuable resources. After years in which injuries repeatedly interrupted his career, getting him through a long and demanding season requires careful management.

Playing another 90 minutes at 2,600 metres above sea level, combined with a lengthy international journey, could have consequences far beyond one Copa Sudamericana match.

Santos therefore appear willing to trust their squad depth and the narrow advantage they earned in Brazil.

The return of Moisés from an ankle injury gives Cuca another attacking option, while players including Rollheiser, Thaciano, Caballero and Rony are available for the trip.

But none of them can provide exactly what Neymar does.

And if Santos find themselves chasing a goal in Ambato on Thursday night, there will be no No.10 waiting on the bench to rescue them.

Neymar stays home while Santos take the risk

For Neymar, the decision may ultimately be sensible.

For Santos, it is unquestionably a risk.

They are entering a decisive continental match away from home, at altitude, protecting a lead of just one goal and doing so without arguably the two biggest attacking names in their squad.

If they qualify, Cuca’s squad management will look perfectly justified.

If they don’t, the decision to leave Neymar more than 4,000 kilometres away in Brazil will inevitably become one of the biggest talking points of their elimination.

Santos believe they can finish the job without Neymar. Now they have to prove it.
