Developments following the 2026 World Cup final between Argentina and Spain continue to heat up as FIFA officially opened disciplinary proceedings regarding the post-match brawl after the final whistle. Notably, only 1 Spanish player has been placed under investigation.
After referee Slavko Vinčić blew the whistle ending the match with a 1-0 victory in favor of Spain, Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes lost his composure. He shoved Eric Garcia, grabbed the center-back by the neck, then reacted to contact from Gavi by striking the Spanish midfielder in the face, causing the Barcelona player to fall to the ground.
In an official announcement, FIFA stated: “The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has received the report from the prosecutor in charge of disciplinary and ethics cases regarding the incidents that occurred during the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina.”
Gavi is the only Spanish player under investigation
FIFA confirmed that it has opened disciplinary proceedings against several members of the Argentine side for violent conduct.
Specifically, Nahuel Molina is being investigated on two charges of assault (one completed act and one attempted act), Leandro Paredes faces 3 charges of assault, while assistant coach Roberto Ayala is also being investigated on a similar charge.
In addition, FIFA opened a case regarding unsporting behavior against Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada, and notably Pablo Martín Páez Gavira (Gavi). The Barcelona midfielder became the only Spanish player investigated by FIFA following what transpired in the final.
FIFA stated that the individuals involved have been given the opportunity to present their views before the Disciplinary Committee delivers its final verdict in accordance with the provisions of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
What punishment could Gavi face?
If found guilty of unsporting behavior toward an opponent, Gavi risks receiving a suspension of at least 1 match or an appropriate period of suspension in accordance with FIFA regulations.
Besides that, the midfielder born in 2004 could also face other disciplinary actions such as a warning, reprimand, fine, or additional disciplinary measures, depending on the final conclusions of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.
