But Scholes was far from impressed with the captain’s public verdict.

Bruno says old problems have returned

Fernandes criticised United’s lack of aggression and intensity after they suffered a disappointing opening-day defeat.

United also conceded both goals from set-piece situations, despite being aware of Hull’s threat before the match.

Bruno described the performance as a return to the “same mistakes” United had made previously.

Scholes tells Bruno to stay quiet

Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Scholes questioned Bruno’s decision to publicly criticise the team.

The former United midfielder argued that Fernandes himself had not played well enough to be making such strong comments immediately after the defeat.

“I think it’s probably best to keep your mouth shut,” Scholes said when discussing the United captain’s reaction.

For Scholes, the problem was not simply what Bruno said, but the timing of those comments following his own disappointing performance.

Scholes believes responsibility must be shared

Scholes did not suggest that Bruno was solely responsible for the defeat.

Instead, he argued that several United players had performed below expectations and that the responsibility should remain collective.

The former midfielder believes a captain must also look at his own performance before publicly highlighting the mistakes of the wider team.

Luke Shaw also comes under fire

Scholes also reacted strongly to comments made by Luke Shaw after the game.

Shaw suggested United could have prepared better for Hull’s strengths, particularly from set-pieces.

Scholes interpreted that comment as potentially reflecting badly on Michael Carrick and his coaching staff.

He suggested that a manager would want to speak directly with a player after hearing such a public remark.

Maguire criticised for Hull opener

Harry Maguire was another United player criticised by Scholes.

The former midfielder questioned Maguire’s positioning during Hull’s opening goal and argued that the defender appeared to lose his bearings during the set-piece.

It added to a broader criticism of United’s performance rather than an attack focused entirely on Fernandes.
