The milestone came after Messi produced two assists in Inter Miami’s 2-2 draw with Atlanta United.
At 39, the Argentine continues to post attacking numbers that no other player in MLS history has matched across multiple seasons.
Messi becomes first MLS player to achieve historic feat
Messi’s two assists against Atlanta United took his 2026 MLS regular-season total to 18 goals and 12 assists.
That means he has now reached exactly 30 goal contributions this season.
More importantly, it is the third different MLS campaign in which he has reached the 30-goal-contribution mark.
No player in league history had previously achieved that feat.
Messi’s incredible three-season record
His numbers across the last three MLS seasons underline the consistency behind the record.
2024: 20 goals and 16 assists, 36 goal contributions.
2025: 29 goals and 19 assists, 48 goal contributions.
2026: 18 goals and 12 assists, 30 goal contributions so far.
The most remarkable detail is that the current season is not yet finished.
Messi therefore still has time to push his 2026 total considerably higher.
Only 20 appearances needed this season
Messi has reached 30 goal contributions in just 20 MLS appearances this year.
That works out at an average of 1.5 goal contributions per game.
For a player who is now 39, the level of productivity remains exceptional.
It is another example of how Messi has continued to dominate MLS even deep into the final stages of his career.
Two assists against Atlanta create the record
Messi did not score against Atlanta United, but he directly influenced both Inter Miami goals.
His corner created the opening goal, with Casemiro heading home from the delivery.
Messi was also credited with involvement in the move that led to Luis Suárez scoring Inter Miami’s second goal.
The match eventually finished 2-2 after Atlanta United found a late equaliser.
Despite the dropped points, the game still became another historic night for Messi individually.
Messi continues rewriting MLS record books
This is not the first major MLS record Messi has broken in 2026.
Earlier this season, he became the fastest player in league history to reach 100 regular-season goal contributions.
Messi needed only 64 matches to reach that landmark.
The previous record belonged to Sebastian Giovinco, who required 95 games.
Messi therefore reached the mark 31 matches faster.
Another MVP record could be next
Messi’s current form also keeps him firmly in the conversation for another Landon Donovan MLS MVP award.
He has already won the prize in both 2024 and 2025.
That made him the first player in MLS history to win MVP in consecutive seasons.
If he wins the award again in 2026, he would become the first player ever to claim three straight MLS MVP titles.
His record-breaking attacking numbers will only strengthen that case.
Messi nearly broke another major record in 2025
Messi’s 2025 season remains one of the greatest individual campaigns in MLS history.
He finished the regular season with 48 goal contributions from 29 goals and 19 assists.
That total was only one short of Carlos Vela’s single-season MLS record of 49.
Messi also collected the MLS Golden Boot, MLS MVP, MLS Cup and MLS Cup MVP during an extraordinary year.
He then added a playoff record with 15 goal contributions during Inter Miami’s title run.
One MLS record still remains far away
Despite Messi’s extraordinary pace, there are still some records that remain difficult to reach.
The most notable is Landon Donovan’s all-time MLS regular-season assist record.
Donovan finished his career with 136 assists, a total Messi remains a long way from reaching.
Given Messi’s age and the uncertainty around how many more seasons he will play, that record may remain out of reach.
Another historic achievement at 39
Messi has already transformed the MLS record books since arriving at Inter Miami.
Now, becoming the first player to record 30 or more goal contributions in three different seasons adds another unique achievement to his résumé.
What makes the record even more impressive is the consistency required to produce elite numbers over multiple years rather than during one extraordinary campaign.
And with the 2026 season still ongoing, Messi may not be finished rewriting MLS history yet.
