The World Cup-winning manager has been discussing his future with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) as his current contract approaches its December 2026 expiry date.

Now, reports from Argentina suggest that talks have made major progress, giving supporters fresh hope that Scaloni will remain in charge for another World Cup cycle.

Argentina reach reported agreement with Lionel Scaloni

According to Argentine outlet Doble Amarilla on October 21, Scaloni and the AFA have agreed on the main terms of a new deal.

The report claims that discussions with AFA president Claudio Tapia have progressed after both sides worked through financial details and plans for the national team’s future.

The proposed contract would initially keep Scaloni in charge until the Copa América in 2028, with an option to extend the agreement until the 2030 World Cup.

However, the additional two years would still depend on both sides agreeing to continue their partnership.

Other Argentine outlets, including Agencia Noticias Argentinas and Ámbito, have also reported positive developments in the negotiations.

Importantly, the AFA has not officially announced a signed contract.

Olé reported on October 22 that talks were progressing well but that some details still needed to be completed.

Why keeping Scaloni is so important for Argentina

Scaloni has been one of the most successful managers in Argentina’s history since taking charge in 2018.

Under his leadership, the national team won the Copa América in 2021 and 2024, the Finalissima in 2022 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

His greatest achievement came when Argentina defeated France in the 2022 World Cup final, ending the country’s 36-year wait for football’s biggest trophy.

Scaloni also guided Argentina to the 2026 World Cup final, where they finished as runners-up to Spain.

His ability to build a strong team and manage some of football’s biggest stars has made him a central figure in Argentina’s recent success.

With Lionel Messi having said goodbye to the national team, Scaloni could now play an even more important role in developing Argentina’s next generation.

Scaloni could lead Argentina into a new era after Messi

Argentina are entering a new chapter following Messi’s international farewell.

The team must now prepare for major competitions without the player who led them to World Cup glory in 2022.

Keeping Scaloni would give Argentina stability at a time when several younger players are expected to take on bigger responsibilities.

The manager already knows the national team’s system, understands the pressure of international football and has experience building successful squads.

With the 2030 World Cup approaching, the AFA reportedly believes he is the right person to lead this new project.

Scaloni could make more history with Argentina

If the reported agreement is completed and Scaloni remains until 2030, he could achieve another historic milestone.

He would have the opportunity to lead Argentina at three consecutive World Cups: 2022, 2026 and 2030.

According to Doble Amarilla, Scaloni has already managed 107 matches since taking charge, recording 79 wins, 18 draws and 10 defeats.

He is also moving closer to Guillermo Stábile’s record of 124 matches as Argentina manager.

A long-term agreement would give Scaloni the chance to strengthen his place among the most important coaches in the national team’s history.

When will Argentina officially announce Scaloni’s new contract?

Although reports suggest that an agreement is close, supporters may have to wait for an official announcement.

The AFA is reportedly considering confirming the new deal during the November international break, potentially before Argentina’s friendly against Uruguay on November 13.

However, no official signing date has been confirmed.
