Brazil issues sad Neymar update ahead of 2026 World Cup

Just days before their opening match at the 2026 World Cup, the Brazilian national team unexpectedly announced that Neymar is unable to play, leaving fans on edge.

The Brazilian national team continues to receive unfortunate news as Neymar will not travel with the squad to Cleveland for a friendly match against Egypt on June 7, with the 2026 World Cup set to kick off in just a few days.

According to an announcement from the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), the 34-year-old forward will remain in New Jersey to continue treatment for a calf injury. Previously, the Brazilian national team doctor stated that Neymar could be sidelined for two to three weeks.

The condition of the Santos star leaves his availability for Brazil’s 2026 World Cup opener up in the air. The South American representatives will face Morocco on June 13 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Head coach Carlo Ancelotti’s decision to include Neymar in the 26-man World Cup squad right from the start was considered a risky move. Despite remaining the greatest goalscorer in Brazil’s history with 79 goals, Neymar has constantly struggled with fitness since suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee during a World Cup qualifying match in October 2023. However, the Italian tactician still places his trust in his experienced pupil.

“Neymar still has time to improve his fitness before the first match at the World Cup. He has extensive experience in major tournaments, is beloved by the entire team, and can help create a positive atmosphere within the squad,” Ancelotti shared last month.

Since the beginning of 2026, Neymar has only made 8 appearances for Santos, scoring 4 goals and providing 2 assists. Under FIFA regulations, national teams are still allowed to replace injured players up until one day before their first World Cup match. If he recovers in time to play, this will be the fourth World Cup of Neymar’s career.
