Midfielder Casemiro affirmed that Lionel Messi is the greatest player in history and revealed that the presence of the Argentine superstar was what made him decide to join Inter Miami during the summer 2026 transfer window.
During the unveiling ceremony at his new club, the former Manchester United midfielder said he rejected many attractive offers to move to MLS, with his primary goal being to play alongside Messi. “I came here to play alongside the best player of all time. I want to help him keep winning more titles, because Messi was born to win. I am also someone who always hungers to conquer the highest peaks,” Casemiro shared.
The Brazilian midfielder signed with Inter Miami on a free transfer after parting ways with Manchester United. The contract between the two sides runs until the end of the 2027 season, with an option to extend through 2029.
Casemiro revealed he received multiple offers from Serie A as well as other leagues, but ultimately chose Inter Miami. “I had many options, but this is where I truly wanted to come. Messi, to me, is one of the greatest players, even a ‘god’ of football. I want to contribute to making him even greater.”
Throughout nine years wearing the Real Madrid shirt, Casemiro faced Messi many times when the Argentine star was playing for Barcelona. He admitted it was the biggest challenge of his career. “Messi used to cause me endless difficulties. Every time we faced each other, I always needed support from my teammates to stop him. I used to dream of playing alongside Messi one day, and now that has become reality.”
Casemiro made his Inter Miami debut in a 1-0 victory against CF Montreal last weekend. Meanwhile, Messi has also just returned to training after his post-2026 World Cup vacation and is likely to return to action soon.
Casemiro’s arrival is expected to significantly strengthen the midfield, helping Inter Miami continue competing for the MLS championship as well as major titles for the remainder of the season.
