The teenager received the armband during Barcelona’s 5-1 Champions League victory over Feyenoord at 19 years and 58 days old.
Within minutes, Yamal scored a brilliant free-kick before later providing an assist.

The historic moment arrived in the second half against Feyenoord.
Raphinha started the match as captain, while Pedri was also ahead of Yamal in Barcelona’s leadership order. After Pedri had been substituted and Raphinha then left the pitch, the armband was passed to Yamal.
At 19 years and 58 days, he became the youngest player in Barcelona first-team history to captain the club in an official match.
Yamal breaks Bojan’s 16-year record
The previous record had stood since 2010, when Bojan Krkić captained Barcelona against Ceuta in the Copa del Rey at approximately 20 years and 59 days old.
Yamal has now broken that record by more than a year.
Bojan’s mark survived for around 16 years before Barcelona’s latest academy star surpassed it.
He did not start the game as captain
Yamal did not wear the armband at kick-off.
Raphinha began the match as captain, with Pedri also part of the leadership order before being substituted. When Raphinha was withdrawn around the 71st minute, responsibility passed to Yamal.
That moment officially placed the 19-year-old into Barcelona’s history books.
Six minutes later, Yamal scores
Yamal marked his first appearance as Barcelona captain in perfect fashion.
Approximately six minutes after receiving the armband, he scored from a free-kick near the edge of the penalty area.
His strike put Barcelona 4-0 ahead, and he then celebrated with Raphinha, the player who had handed him the captaincy.
Then came an assist
Yamal’s historic evening continued in the closing stages.
He cut inside from the right before supplying the pass for Gabriel Jesus to score Barcelona’s fifth goal.
His short spell wearing the armband produced one goal, one assist and another club record.
Barcelona open Champions League campaign in style
Barcelona dominated Feyenoord and eventually won 5-1.
Raphinha scored twice, Karim Adeyemi also found the net, while Yamal and Gabriel Jesus completed the scoring.
For Yamal, however, the night will be remembered primarily for becoming Barcelona’s youngest official first-team captain.
Yamal is now part of Barcelona’s leadership group
Yamal’s achievement reflects his growing status within the squad.
He has already been included in Barcelona’s official group of captains alongside Raphinha, Pedri, Eric García and Frenkie de Jong.
For a 19-year-old to hold that level of responsibility at Barcelona is remarkable.
Yamal had spoken about the captaincy one day earlier
Before Barcelona’s Champions League opener, Yamal discussed what it meant to receive leadership responsibility at such a young age.
He described becoming one of the club’s captains at 19 as something to be proud of.
He also acknowledged that wearing the armband brings responsibility and that he must prove he can handle it. Less than 24 hours later, he was wearing it in the Champions League.
But Yamal is NOT the youngest Champions League captain ever
Yamal is Barcelona’s youngest-ever first-team captain in an official match, but he is not the youngest captain in Champions League history.
That record belongs to former Porto midfielder Rúben Neves, who captained Porto against Maccabi Tel Aviv in 2015 at 18 years and 221 days old.
Matthijs de Ligt also wore the armband for Ajax at 19 years and 51 days, while Yamal was 19 years and 58 days against Feyenoord.
Yamal still enters elite Champions League company
Although he did not break the competition-wide record, Yamal joins an impressive list of young Champions League captains:
Rúben Neves, 18 years and 221 days.
Matthijs de Ligt, 19 years and 51 days.
Lamine Yamal, 19 years and 58 days.
Jude Bellingham, 19 years and 98 days.
That places the Barcelona winger among the youngest leaders in the tournament’s history.
Another Mbappe record is also getting closer
Yamal’s goal also moved him to 12 Champions League goals before his 20th birthday, according to the available figures.
Kylian Mbappe scored 13 before turning 20, meaning Yamal is now within touching distance of another major youth benchmark.
With his 20th birthday still ahead, he has further opportunities to add to his European total.

The Barcelona star has already broken age records for both club and country and established himself among the most dangerous young attackers in world football.
