Wayne Rooney has questioned Bruno Fernandes’ post-match assessment after Manchester United’s shock defeat to Hull City, describing one of the captain’s comments as “strange” and demanding a more aggressive United side.
Wayne Rooney Questions Bruno Fernandes’ ‘Strange’ Man Utd Verdict After Hull Defeat

Wayne Rooney has questioned Bruno Fernandes’ reaction to Manchester United’s shock 2-0 Premier League defeat to Hull City.
Fernandes delivered a blunt assessment after the final whistle, saying United had repeated the “same mistakes as we did last season”.
But Rooney was surprised by those words.
Speaking during his post-match analysis, the former United captain described Bruno’s comment as “strange”, particularly after the progress Michael Carrick’s team had shown last season.
Rooney questions Bruno’s comments
Manchester United finished third under Carrick last season and returned to the Champions League, raising expectations ahead of the new campaign.
That is why Rooney found Bruno’s assessment concerning.

“It’s a strange quote from Bruno,” Rooney said when discussing the United captain’s comments.
If the same problems are already returning, Rooney believes questions must be asked about how much United have genuinely improved.
Bruno says old mistakes are back
Fernandes was frustrated by United’s lack of aggression during the opening stages against Hull.
The captain said his team gave the promoted side too much time on the ball and needed to press with much greater intensity.

United also conceded both goals from set-pieces despite knowing Hull would pose a major threat from dead-ball situations.
For Bruno, those problems felt worryingly familiar.
Rooney agrees United were too passive
Although Rooney questioned Bruno’s choice of words, he agreed with the captain on one major issue.
United were far too passive.
Rooney criticised their pressing and suggested Hull were allowed to move the ball too comfortably without enough pressure from Carrick’s players.
The former striker believes Manchester United must become the type of team opponents fear playing against again.
That was not the case at Hull.
Luke Shaw also comes under criticism
Rooney was particularly critical of United’s defending for Hull’s second goal.
He described aspects of Luke Shaw’s positioning as “schoolboy defending”, arguing that the defender dropped too deep and damaged United’s defensive line.

Hull took advantage and secured a famous 2-0 victory over a United side that struggled to deal with the home team’s physical approach and set-piece threat.
No personal attack on Bruno
Despite the headlines surrounding Rooney’s reaction, there is no indication that he was personally attacking Fernandes.
He did not question Bruno’s captaincy or blame him for the defeat.
Instead, Rooney challenged the wider message behind his comments.
If United really are making the same mistakes again, then the progress made last season must quickly translate into better performances.
Pressure already building on Man Utd
Manchester United’s opening-day defeat has already generated uncomfortable questions.
Bruno believes familiar weaknesses have returned.
Rooney believes the team were too passive and should be imposing themselves on opponents far more aggressively.
Carrick, meanwhile, has urged calm and insisted one result will not change the direction of the team.
But after a 2-0 defeat to newly promoted Hull City, United now need a response on the pitch.
For Rooney, the standard is clear.
Manchester United should not be a team opponents feel comfortable playing against.
They should be a team opponents fear.
