Lionel Messi has added another record to his extraordinary career after making MLS history in Inter Miami’s 2-2 draw with Atlanta United.
The Argentine superstar recorded two assists according to official MLS statistics, taking his 2026 league total to 18 goals and 12 assists.
That made Messi the first player in MLS history to reach at least 30 goal contributions in three different seasons.
Messi reaches 30 goal contributions again
Messi entered the Atlanta United match already enjoying another outstanding MLS campaign.
His two assists lifted his 2026 total to 30 direct goal contributions.
He now has 18 goals and 12 assists in MLS this season.
The achievement places him in a category no other player in league history has reached.
First player to do it in three different MLS seasons
The record is based on Messi reaching the 30-goal-contribution mark across three separate campaigns.
He previously achieved the milestone in both 2024 and 2025.
Messi has now recorded at least 30 goals plus assists in MLS in 2024, 2025 and 2026.
No other player has managed the feat in three different seasons.
Messi’s incredible three-season numbers
The scale of Messi’s consistency in the United States becomes clearer when looking at his production across each campaign.
In 2024, Messi recorded 20 goals and 16 assists for a total of 36 goal contributions.
He then improved those numbers dramatically in 2025, finishing with 29 goals and 19 assists for 48 goal contributions.
His 2026 total has now reached 30 and still has room to grow before the season is complete.
Two assists against Atlanta United
Messi played a major role in Inter Miami’s attacking performance against Atlanta.
His corner created the opening goal, with Casemiro heading the ball into the net.
MLS also credited Messi with a secondary assist in the move that ended with Luis Suarez scoring Miami’s second goal.
Those two contributions were enough to push Messi across the historic 30-G+A mark.
Why some reports counted only one assist
There was some confusion immediately after the match over Messi’s assist total.
Some reports credited him only with the corner that produced Casemiro’s goal.
Official MLS statistics, however, credited Messi with two assists because the league also recognises secondary assists in certain scoring sequences.
For MLS record purposes, his official season total is therefore 18 goals and 12 assists.
First club game since Argentina retirement
The timing of Messi’s latest record made the achievement even more symbolic.
The Atlanta United match was his first appearance for Inter Miami since announcing his retirement from the Argentina national team.
Only days after closing one of the greatest international careers in football history, Messi immediately returned to club action and broke another record.
His influence at Inter Miami remains as strong as ever.
Inter Miami unable to hold on
Despite Messi’s creativity, Inter Miami were unable to secure all three points.
Casemiro gave Miami the lead before Atlanta equalised.
Luis Suarez restored Miami’s advantage, but Atlanta fought back once again.
Breel Embolo converted a late penalty to secure a 2-2 draw for Atlanta United.
The result prevented Miami from celebrating a victory, but Messi still left the match with another place in the MLS record books.
Messi has already broken several MLS records
The latest achievement continues a remarkable sequence of records for Messi in the United States.
He recently became the fastest player in MLS history to reach 100 career goal contributions.
Messi also became the fastest player in league history to record 20 matches with at least two goals.
His four-goal performance against Montreal was another reminder that his scoring ability remains elite despite his age.
Third straight MLS MVP now possible
Messi has already won the MLS Most Valuable Player award in consecutive seasons.
He became the first player in league history to win the honour back-to-back in 2024 and 2025.
With 30 goal contributions already in 2026, a third consecutive MVP award is now a realistic possibility.
If Messi wins again, he would extend another MLS record that already belongs to him.
