Brazilian football icon Neymar has never been shy about recognizing global talent, but his recent comments regarding 18-year-old Barcelona phenom Lamine Yamal have elevated his praise to an entirely different level.
In a recent interview, the former Barcelona star spoke incredibly highly of Yamal, highlighting a deep, mutual admiration that has blossomed between the veteran and the teenage sensation.
A Bond Built on Idolization
The connection between the two dynamic wingers actually predates Yamal’s explosive rise to global stardom. The Spanish international has openly stated on multiple occasions that Neymar was his childhood idol—the player he obsessively studied to mold his own creativity, dribbling flair, and fearless attacking mindset.
That distant admiration eventually turned into a real-life friendship. In June 2025, Yamal spent a portion of his summer vacation in Brazil with Neymar. The two were spotted playing beach soccer and footvolley together, famously exchanging Santos and FC Barcelona jerseys. Since that trip, Neymar has been one of Yamal’s loudest public supporters, frequently reacting to his spectacular performances on social media, dubbing him a “crack,” and even busting out one of Yamal’s signature celebrations after scoring a goal for Santos in 2026.
“Simply Unnatural”
When asked recently about Yamal’s trajectory, Neymar offered an incredibly lofty comparison that places the teenager in the rarest of footballing tiers.
“I truly believe that Lamine is one of the greatest teenage talents that football has ever seen,” Neymar stated. He then took it a step further: “There was Messi, and there was me… what this boy is doing at 18 is simply unnatural.”
Coming from Neymar, this is incredibly high praise. The Brazilian knows exactly what it feels like to carry the crushing weight of global expectations and intense media scrutiny as a teenager. He specifically highlighted Yamal’s ability to step up in high-pressure situations, referencing Barcelona’s recent European heartbreak. “I felt for him when he went out of the Champions League… he gave everything. He was the spark that started the comeback,” Neymar noted.
More Neymar Than Messi?
At Barcelona, Yamal is no longer being coddled as a fragile young prospect; he is the undisputed focal point of their attack. While it is almost customary to compare any left-footed Barcelona prodigy to Lionel Messi, some inside the locker room see a different reflection.
According to current Barca teammate Raphinha, Yamal’s playing style actually feels much closer to Neymar’s. The way the 18-year-old aggressively takes on defenders in 1v1 situations, his unpredictability, and how quickly he reads his opponents’ movements mirror the Brazilian wizard’s iconic flair.
As he wrapped up his thoughts, Neymar made it clear that he expects Yamal to reach the absolute pinnacle of the sport. “His time is coming. I hope he wins the Champions League next year, and why not the Ballon d’Or too?” Neymar concluded. “Lamine is a very special player. I’ll always keep supporting him.”
