Messi’s match sets new record in MLS history

When greatness comes to town, the fans follow. The Colorado Rapids witnessed this firsthand on Saturday, welcoming a staggering 75,824 fans for their Matchday 8 showdown against Lionel Messi and Inter Miami CF. The massive turnout officially ranks as the second-highest single-game attendance in Major League Soccer history.

To accommodate the unprecedented demand for their 30th Anniversary Match, the Rapids moved the fixture from their usual home at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park to Empower Field at Mile High—the sprawling home of the NFL’s Denver Broncos. The sold-out crowd was treated to a thrilling 3-2 victory for the visiting Miami side.

Chasing Historic Numbers

The incredible turnout in Denver easily shattered the Rapids’ previous home attendance record of 61,202, which was set nearly two decades ago when they hosted the Chicago Fire on July 4, 2002.

In fact, the only MLS match to ever draw a larger crowd was the legendary El Tráfico rivalry game between the LA Galaxy and LAFC. Played on July 4, 2023, at the iconic Rose Bowl, that fixture pulled in 82,110 spectators.

This match is part of a massive, ongoing surge in live attendance across the league. Remarkably, three of the top 10 highest-attended matches in MLS history have taken place in 2026 alone:

  • 75,824 fans: Colorado Rapids vs. Inter Miami (Empower Field at Mile High)
  • 75,673 fans: LAFC vs. Inter Miami (Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum)
  • 72,026 fans: D.C. United vs. Inter Miami (M&T Bank Stadium)

It is no coincidence that these massive crowds have been hosted at special NFL or college football venues, as soccer momentum continues to skyrocket in the build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The “Messi Factor” Remains Unmatched

Wherever Lionel Messi goes, the crowds follow. Ever since the Argentine maestro joined Inter Miami in July 2023, he has been a one-man economic engine for the league, consistently shattering away-game attendance records in cities like Chicago, Columbus, New England, and Kansas City.

Fresh off winning back-to-back Landon Donovan MLS MVP awards, Messi continues to fuel historic turnouts in 2026. He certainly didn’t disappoint the Denver crowd on Saturday. The legendary forward delivered a breathtaking performance, netting a brace that featured a vintage, left-footed golazo in the 79th minute to seal the 3-2 victory for Inter Miami.
