The exchange became one of the most talked-about moments of the match after cameras showed Messi angrily confronting the Portuguese official and demanding that he speak to him respectfully.

Pinheiro has now claimed that the entire dispute began because Messi misunderstood what he had said.

Messi believed he had been disrespected

The incident occurred during the first half after Pinheiro awarded Switzerland a free-kick near Argentina’s penalty area.

Pinheiro insists that was never his intention.

Messi, however, remained convinced during the exchange that Pinheiro had crossed the line.

The two reportedly debated the issue for around 30 seconds before the match continued.

Viral footage made argument look bigger

Cameras captured Messi pointing towards the referee and demanding that he speak to him properly, causing the footage to spread rapidly across social media.

At the time, viewers could see Messi’s angry reaction but did not have the full context of what had been said immediately beforehand.

Pinheiro believes the attention surrounding the incident was amplified because Messi was involved.

He suggested that similar disagreements between captains and referees happen regularly during matches without attracting the same level of attention.

No lasting problem between Messi and referee

Pinheiro also stressed that the argument did not develop into a larger conflict.

According to the referee, there were no further significant problems with Messi or Argentina during the remainder of the match.

He described the incident as a brief misunderstanding rather than evidence of any serious dispute between himself and the Argentina captain.

Messi has not responded to referee’s explanation

Messi has not publicly responded to Pinheiro’s latest account of the incident.

There has also been no suggestion that the Argentine has admitted he misunderstood the referee or that either side has demanded an apology.

For now, Pinheiro’s comments provide the clearest explanation yet of a confrontation that generated huge attention during Argentina’s World Cup campaign.

What looked like a major argument on television may ultimately have been nothing more than a 30-second misunderstanding between one of football’s biggest stars and the man in charge of the match.
