Ange Postecoglou has revealed the tactical and fitness reasons behind his decision to substitute Cristiano Ronaldo at half-time before Al Nassr completed a remarkable 3-2 comeback.
Ange Postecoglou reveals real reason he subbed Cristiano Ronaldo at half-time
Ange Postecoglou has explained why he made the huge decision to substitute Cristiano Ronaldo at half-time during Al Nassr’s dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Al-Ettifaq.

Ronaldo started the match but was withdrawn before the second half began, with the decision immediately attracting huge attention.
Al Nassr were already 2-0 down and playing with 10 men following Bento’s early red card.
Postecoglou needed a different approach
Postecoglou explained after the match that the situation forced him to completely change Al Nassr’s tactical structure.
The Australian coach said the team needed a “different approach in the second half” after being reduced to 10 men.

That meant adding more balance and energy in midfield rather than continuing with the same attacking setup.
Ronaldo’s substitution was therefore a tactical decision rather than a punishment.
Ronaldo still building match fitness
Postecoglou also pointed to Ronaldo’s recent lack of competitive minutes.
The 41-year-old had not played extensively since the World Cup and had only made a brief substitute appearance earlier in the season before starting against Al-Ettifaq.
The Al Nassr boss suggested that this was another factor considered when deciding how to approach the second half.

Importantly, Postecoglou still praised Ronaldo’s first-half contribution and said the Portuguese star had done a good job for the team.
Postecoglou backs his substitutes
The Al Nassr coach also revealed that he trusted the players coming from the bench to change the match.
He believed the substitutions could provide the energy and tactical flexibility required to compete despite the numerical disadvantage.
That belief was rewarded in spectacular fashion.
Al Nassr complete incredible comeback
Despite entering the second half two goals behind and with only 10 players, Al Nassr produced an extraordinary turnaround.
Sadio Mané scored twice, while Abdulelah Al-Amri also found the net as Postecoglou’s side recovered to win 3-2.

The comeback immediately placed even more attention on the manager’s decision to remove Ronaldo.
No punishment or injury for Ronaldo
Postecoglou’s explanation also dismissed several theories surrounding the substitution.
There is no indication Ronaldo was removed because of disciplinary reasons, a disagreement with the manager or a new injury.
The decision was based on the unusual circumstances of the match and the need to reshape the team after Bento’s red card.
Ronaldo’s reaction still sparks debate
Ronaldo was visibly frustrated after being substituted, with cameras capturing his unhappy reaction as he headed towards the tunnel.
However, there is currently no evidence of a serious conflict between the striker and Postecoglou.

Ronaldo later celebrated the victory on social media with the message “WHAT. A. COMEBACK!”
Postecoglou’s gamble ultimately paid off. What initially looked like a shocking decision to remove Ronaldo became part of one of Al Nassr’s most remarkable comeback victories.
