5 reasons to believe Neymar could reunite with Lionel Messi at Inter Miami

The dream of seeing Neymar and Lionel Messi together again may not be over just yet. Fresh reports have linked the Brazilian superstar with a stunning move to Inter Miami in 2027, and this time, there are several pieces of the puzzle that appear to fit.

Neymar’s future at Santos is once again becoming a major talking point.

The 34-year-old is approaching the final months of his current contract in Brazil, and fresh speculation suggests that his next destination could be the United States.

Former Brazil international Felipe Melo has even claimed that Neymar could join Inter Miami in January 2027, potentially setting up one final reunion with Lionel Messi.

No agreement has been confirmed, but there are several reasons why this rumor might be worth taking seriously.

1. Felipe Melo has given a very specific date

This latest round of speculation did not begin with a vague social media rumor.

Felipe Melo claimed on his YouTube channel that he had received information from a source who had previously given him accurate news regarding Santos.

According to Melo, Neymar is expected to leave Santos and head to Miami in January 2027.

That does not make the move official, of course. Melo himself stopped short of claiming that a contract had already been signed.

But the specificity of the information is what makes the story interesting.

Instead of simply suggesting that Neymar “could someday play in MLS,” the former Brazil midfielder has pointed to an exact transfer window.

And that date happens to line up perfectly with another important detail.

2. Neymar could be available for free

Neymar’s current agreement with Santos runs until December 31, 2026.

In other words, if he does not sign another extension, Neymar could become a free agent immediately before the January 2027 window mentioned by Felipe Melo.

That could make a huge difference for Inter Miami.

The MLS club would not need to negotiate a transfer fee with Santos. Their main challenge would instead be finding a way to fit Neymar’s salary into the league’s roster regulations.

For a player approaching the final stage of his career, a free transfer would make the deal considerably easier to construct.

3. Neymar has already admitted he wants to play with Messi again

Perhaps the strongest reason to believe a reunion is possible comes from Neymar himself.

Back in January 2025, while still an Al Hilal player, the Brazilian openly discussed the possibility of playing alongside Messi and Luis Suarez again.

Neymar said it would be “incredible” to reunite with his former Barcelona teammates and revealed that the three remained in contact.

At the time, the idea was extremely difficult to turn into reality.

Neymar was under contract elsewhere, while Inter Miami were already operating under strict MLS roster restrictions.

Things could look very different in January 2027.

Neymar could be available as a free agent, while the 2026 World Cup would already be behind him.

What once looked like little more than a nostalgic fantasy may therefore become a genuine career option.

4. Inter Miami have already opened the door to Neymar

Inter Miami have never completely dismissed the idea of signing Neymar.

Managing owner Jorge Mas has previously made it clear that the club would be interested if a player of Neymar’s caliber became available.

Miami have built their project around attracting some of the biggest names in world football, with Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba all making the move to South Florida in recent years.

Neymar would clearly fit that profile.

There is, however, one major complication.

MLS clubs operate under strict roster and salary regulations, and those rules have previously made the prospect of adding Neymar extremely difficult.

But circumstances can change quickly.

If Neymar is prepared to structure his contract appropriately, and Miami can create the necessary roster space, the possibility cannot simply be ruled out.

5. Messi is staying in Miami long enough for the reunion to happen

There would be little point discussing a Neymar reunion if Messi were about to leave Inter Miami.

But the Argentine has committed his future to the club beyond 2026, creating a genuine window for the two South American superstars to play together again if Neymar arrives in 2027.

Messi and Neymar first shared the pitch at Barcelona, where they formed a legendary attacking partnership alongside Luis Suarez.

Together, they helped Barcelona win the Champions League, La Liga and several other major trophies before Neymar completed his world-record move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017.

The pair later reunited at PSG between 2021 and 2023.

Miami could potentially offer them one final chapter.

So, is Neymar really going to Inter Miami?

Not yet.

There is currently no confirmed agreement between Neymar and Inter Miami, and there are still major obstacles that would need to be overcome before any transfer could happen.

MLS roster regulations could make the deal complicated, while Neymar himself must still decide what he wants to do after his Santos contract expires.

But compared with many previous rumors, this one comes with several unusually convenient pieces.

Neymar’s Santos contract expires at the end of December. Felipe Melo has specifically mentioned January 2027. Neymar has publicly spoken about wanting to play with Messi again. Inter Miami have previously opened the door to signing him. And Messi is expected to still be in Miami when Neymar becomes available.

None of that guarantees the transfer.

But for anyone dreaming of seeing Neymar and Messi sharing a pitch one last time, there are now more reasons than ever to believe it could actually happen.
