Cristiano Ronaldo could not hide his disappointment as the Portuguese national team was held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo in their opening match of Group K at the 2026 World Cup.
At NRG Stadium, Portugal got off to a favorable start when Joao Neves opened the scoring right in the 6th minute, giving the European representatives control of the game. However, the advantage did not last long as Yoane Wissa delivered an accurate finish just before the halftime break.
Immediately after conceding the goal, television cameras captured captain Ronaldo appearing extremely angry, continuously gesturing and directing his frustration toward Diogo Costa. This moment quickly went viral on social media.
However, multiple camera angles showed that the Portuguese goalkeeper was not directly responsible. The situation leading to the goal stemmed from the defense being stretched, allowing Wissa the space to comfortably finish inside the penalty area without being tightly marked.
Ronaldo’s strong reaction further fueled debate about his leadership role within the squad. A portion of the fanbase argued that publicly displaying anger toward a teammate on the pitch could negatively affect the entire team’s morale. Even so, there were also voices defending the 41-year-old superstar, suggesting that his reaction stemmed from his burning desire to win and the strict standards he always sets for himself and the collective.
The draw puts early pressure on Portugal’s journey at the 2026 World Cup, given that they are still considered top favorites to advance. Portugal will go on to face Uzbekistan (June 24) and Colombia (June 28) in Group K.
