Atlético Madrid have still shown no willingness to open the door for their Argentine superstar, while Álvarez has returned to training and is attempting to handle an increasingly uncomfortable situation professionally.
Now Barcelona appear to be approaching a decision point.
Cadena SER reports that Julián remains the club’s number one attacking target, but Barça have effectively placed an expiry date on their pursuit at the end of next week. If the situation does not move by then, the Catalan club could finally begin activating alternative options.
And one name is rapidly moving into focus.

Barcelona are still prioritizing Julián Álvarez
Despite the growing discussion around alternatives, Barcelona have not abandoned their pursuit of Álvarez.
Cadena SER says the Atlético forward remains Deco’s first choice and that Barça will continue trying to find a route to the deal before seriously moving for another striker.
Mundo Deportivo went even further in its latest update.
The Catalan newspaper reports that Barcelona’s confidence in both Álvarez and Manchester City midfielder Rodri remains extremely strong. According to the report, Barça currently view Julián not simply as Plan A, but effectively as Plans A, B, C and D.
That is a significant distinction.
Barcelona may be researching other forwards, but researching alternatives is not the same as abandoning Álvarez.
The club still believe the Argentine wants to join Hansi Flick’s project and that there could be further movement once Álvarez speaks again with the Atlético hierarchy.
But the Julián saga now has a time limit
The important new development is that Barcelona cannot allow the situation to drag on indefinitely.
Cadena SER reports that the club have placed a deadline around the end of next week for meaningful progress to be made.
Barcelona need a striker, the transfer window is moving toward its closing stages, and Atlético have so far remained unmoved.
If nothing changes, Barça risk spending the final days of the market chasing a player whose club simply refuses to negotiate.

AS has independently reported that Suárez is on Deco’s list and says Hansi Flick has also approved the possibility of signing him if the pursuit of Julián remains blocked.
ESPN, citing transfer reporting around the situation, also says Barcelona are prepared to consider Suárez and other options from next week if no breakthrough is found for Álvarez.
For now, however, there is no agreement with Sporting and no confirmed Barcelona bid.
Who is the other Luis Suárez?
The name will immediately sound familiar to Barcelona supporters, but this is not the Uruguayan legend who formed one of football’s greatest attacking trios alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar.
This Luis Suárez is a Colombian striker who currently plays for Sporting CP.
The 28-year-old has developed into one of the most productive forwards in Portugal and finished last season as the league’s leading scorer with 28 goals in 32 appearances. AS credits him with 38 goals across all competitions.
His profile is also different from some of the other attacking options linked with Barcelona.
Suárez is a natural central striker who can play with his back to goal, attack space, work inside the penalty area and press defenders.
AS reports that his experience in Spanish football is another reason his profile appeals to Barcelona’s sporting department.
Luis Suárez would still not be an easy signing
Calling Suárez a Plan B does not mean Barcelona could simply sign him immediately.
He remains an important player for Sporting.
Cadena SER reports that his contract contains an €80 million release clause, while ESPN says Sporting are seeking around the same figure for their leading scorer.
That would still represent a major investment.
However, the operation is viewed as considerably more achievable than the huge financial and political battle required to take Álvarez directly from Atlético Madrid.
AS notes that Suárez’s market valuation is significantly lower than the level associated with Álvarez.
Atlético still refuse to open the door
The biggest obstacle remains Atlético Madrid.
Álvarez has made no secret within the club about wanting to leave for Barcelona, but Diego Simeone and the Atlético hierarchy continue to count on him for the new season.
Cadena SER’s latest reporting says the Argentine has apologized to Atlético for the way the transfer saga has been handled, while his underlying desire to play for Barcelona has not changed.
That apology is significant because Álvarez does not currently appear willing to go on strike, refuse to train or create an open rebellion.
He has returned to Atlético, followed his training program and publicly kept a much lower profile than he did earlier in the saga.
That professionalism helps repair his relationship with Atlético, but it also reduces the immediate pressure on the club to sell.
Julián may need to make another move
Mundo Deportivo believes Álvarez has not given up.
Its latest report says the striker is expected to continue pushing for the transfer over the coming week and could seek a direct meeting with Atlético CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín.
The player’s camp has maintained that he expected Atlético to be receptive to a departure if he made clear that he wanted to leave.
Atlético’s position has so far been very different.
The club have repeatedly treated Álvarez as a fundamental part of Simeone’s plans, creating a standoff that personal desire alone has not been enough to resolve.

But Mundo Deportivo insists Barcelona have not seriously activated another route and still believe Álvarez is the only striker they are truly pursuing at this stage.
Both versions can potentially be true at the same time.
A major club must know the availability and price of alternative targets without necessarily negotiating to sign them.
Barcelona can therefore remain fully committed to Julián while simultaneously preparing for the possibility that Atlético never change their position.
Rodri could complicate everything
There is another massive factor hanging over the saga.
Barcelona are also trying to sign Rodri from Manchester City.
Cadena SER analyst Pablo Pinto has argued that completing both Rodri and Álvarez would be extremely difficult financially, especially if Atlético require an enormous fee for their striker. He estimated that the Álvarez operation could need to approach €150 million for the situation to change.
That figure is an analyst’s assessment, not a newly confirmed official asking price from Atlético.
But the broader problem is obvious.

His omission therefore should not be interpreted as evidence that a transfer is imminent.
