After strengthening at the back and upfront, midfield reinforcements are on top of INEOS’ minds and for that to occur, the Red Devils need to take care of outgoings first.
Casemiro, who struggled last season, is one name that the new co-owners want to get rid of but Erik ten Hag is reportedly keen on keeping him.
So far, no serious bids have been forthcoming despite plenty of interest from the Saudi Pro League and that has meant a deal for Manuel Ugarte is yet to reach the finish line.
Christian Eriksen, who was the Brazilian’s go-to midfield partner in Ten Hag’s first season in charge is another who could leave with Ajax and Anderlecht keen on his services.
Midfielder hunt is on
Considering the Dane arrived as a free agent, any sale would be profitable. But if he leaves, the 20-time English league champions could be forced to sign more than one midfielder.
However, with a tight operating budget, United are unlikely to splurge too much cash on another midfielder and that is where Adrien Rabiot could emerge as an option.
The Frenchman has been a genuine target for the club since Ten Hag’s arrival with the Old Trafford side missing out on his signature two summers in a row.
Initially it was due to his wage demands while last time out, the 29-year-old chose to remain at Juventus. He has since left Turin and is looking for a new home.
As relayed by The Peoples Person, the former Paris Saint-Germain star has already rejected Liverpool’s advances and is hellbent on earning a move to the Theatre of Dreams.
As per Tutto Juve, the midfield maestro is asking for €10 million a year, which equates to roughly around €200,000-a-week, quite a hefty ask.
“The Premier League seems to be his next destination, with several clubs interested in acquiring Adrien Rabiot. The midfielder rejected an offer from Liverpool, despite the Anfield club being willing to take him.
Rabiot’s wage demands
“The reason for this refusal is that Rabiot has a clear target in mind: Manchester United. Manchester United’s interest in Rabiot is not new.
“The Old Trafford club have been following the Frenchman’s career closely for several years and now that he is available on a free transfer, the opportunity seems perfect for both parties. Rabiot, with his versatile playing style and ability to control the midfield, would fit well into Erik ten Hag’s plans, with a salary close to 10 million.”
However, not having to pay a fee could mean the three-time Champions League winners could probably afford to pay as much considering Casemiro’s considerable wages would be cleared off the wage bill.
Rabiot is also versatile and can play in multiple positions in midfield and is a goal threat as well, netting 16 goals in his last two campaigns.
INEOS would prefer to agree a deal at a lower wage but convincing his mother and agent Veronique would be quite the challenge.
