The Portuguese legend recently reached 980 goals for club and country, leaving him just 20 away from the historic four-figure mark.

That milestone has brought one of Ronaldo’s boldest statements back into discussion.

“I am the best in history, period,” Ronaldo previously declared when discussing his place among football’s greatest players.

Ronaldo’s famous GOAT claim returns

The quote has been widely shared again as Ronaldo continues adding goals late in his career.

However, there is an important clarification.

The statement is not a completely new comment made in October 2026.

Ronaldo originally made the claim during an interview with Spanish journalist Edu Aguirre that was broadcast in February 2025.

During that interview, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner explained why he believed he should be considered the most complete footballer ever.

‘The best in history is me’

Ronaldo argued that his ability to score in almost every possible way separated him from other legendary players.

He pointed to his goals with his right foot, left foot, head and from free-kicks, while also highlighting the huge number of goals he has scored throughout his career.

Ronaldo insisted that even if his career ended before reaching 1,000 goals, his opinion about his place in history would not change.

He said that whether he finished with around 920, 925 or 930 goals, he would still consider himself the best.

His message was simple.

“The best in history is me. Period.”

980 goals changes the context

The quote has now become relevant again because Ronaldo has moved much closer to his long-term goal of reaching 1,000 career goals.

The Al Nassr forward recently scored his 980th goal, meaning only 20 remain before he reaches the landmark.

Very few players in football history have maintained this level of goalscoring for such a long period.

Ronaldo’s extraordinary numbers continue to strengthen the argument of supporters who believe he deserves to be considered the greatest player of all time.

Messi, Pele and Maradona remain part of debate

Ronaldo has also acknowledged that many fans prefer other legendary names.

Lionel Messi, Pele and Diego Maradona are regularly mentioned in discussions about the greatest player in football history.

Ronaldo has said he respects people who choose those players.

But he has also made it clear that his own answer will always be himself.

For Ronaldo, the argument is not only about trophies or individual awards.

He believes his goals, physical qualities, longevity and ability to perform in different leagues make him the most complete player the sport has seen.

Statement resurfaces during dramatic period

The timing of the renewed attention is also significant.

Ronaldo has recently returned to club football following a major controversy involving the Portugal national team.

His dispute with coach Jorge Jesus and dramatic departure from the Portugal camp have created intense debate around his international future.

At the same time, he has continued scoring for Al Nassr and moving closer to one of the biggest personal milestones of his career.

That contrast has pushed the discussion about Ronaldo’s legacy back into the spotlight.

1,000 goals now within reach

Ronaldo has spoken several times about his ambition to reach 1,000 career goals.

With 980 already recorded, the target now appears much closer than it once did.

If he reaches the landmark, it would add another extraordinary achievement to a career already filled with records.

It would also give Ronaldo’s famous claim about being the best in history even more attention.

GOAT debate unlikely to end

No statistic is likely to completely settle football’s greatest-ever debate.

Supporters of Messi, Pele, Maradona and other legends will continue to defend their choices.

But Ronaldo has never hidden his own belief.

As he moves closer to 1,000 goals, one of the boldest statements of his career has returned at exactly the right moment: “I am the best in history, period.”
