With just a few days remaining before the 2026 World Cup final against Spain, the Argentina national team surprisingly faces the risk of disciplinary review by FIFA. Notably, insiders within the South American team quickly spoke up to explain the controversial post-match celebration following their victory over England.
Following their 2-1 victory over England to book a spot in the 2026 World Cup final, the Argentina national team surprisingly became the center of a major controversy. Instead of solely focusing on the impressive comeback, international media is directing attention toward how the players celebrated with a banner containing content related to the Malvinas (Falkland) Islands, an action believed to potentially leave them facing sanctions from FIFA.

Amid FIFA not yet issuing an official conclusion, those within the Argentine squad quickly spoke up to mitigate the team’s responsibility. According to British media, this is viewed as an effort to avoid disciplinary measures that could impact Argentina following the semi-final match. Notably, the entire explanation revolves around the origin of the controversial banner.
Midfielder Giovani Lo Celso was one of the players seen with the banner after the match. However, defender Gonzalo Montiel affirmed that the national team players did not proactively prepare the item but merely reacted to the situation arising on the pitch. He stated: “Someone threw the banner down from the stands, and then the players just picked it up.” This statement is considered the first direct explanation from the Argentine camp since the incident broke out.
Montiel’s perspective was also echoed by Argentine journalist Nelson Castro. He revealed: “That is an interesting detail, because before that, no one knew how the banner appeared on the pitch. Someone threw it down onto the pitch and then it was passed to the players.” According to this explanation, the players want to prove they did not proactively introduce political messages into their post-match celebration.

Under the 2026 FIFA Disciplinary Code, Article 17 strictly prohibits the use of gestures, words, banners, or other means to convey messages of a political, ideological, or offensive nature at football events. If the FIFA Disciplinary Committee determines that Argentina violated this rule, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) could face various sanctions such as warnings, fines, playing behind closed doors, playing on neutral ground, and even within the penalty framework lies the possibility of annulling the match result or ordering a replay.
Even so, the annulment of the victory over England remains merely an option stipulated in FIFA’s disciplinary system rather than a definite scenario. Every decision will depend on the Disciplinary Committee’s conclusions following a review of the entire matter. While awaiting the verdict, statements from Montiel and Argentine sources indicate that the reigning world champions are making efforts to prove that the players did not intentionally violate FIFA regulations, thereby hoping to avoid severe penalties ahead of the 2026 World Cup final.
