Cristiano Ronaldo remained on the bench for Portugal’s entire 2-1 win over Norway, ending a remarkable 6,678-day streak stretching back to Euro 2008.
Ronaldo sees remarkable 6,678-day Portugal streak end against Norway
Cristiano Ronaldo has reached a very unusual milestone with Portugal after a remarkable streak lasting more than 18 years came to an end against Norway.
The 41-year-old was named among the substitutes for Portugal’s UEFA Nations League clash in Oslo.
But for the first time in more than 18 years in an official international match, Ronaldo remained on the bench for the full 90 minutes.
The gap between the two occasions was an incredible:
6,678 DAYS
Ronaldo stays on the bench for the entire match
Portugal secured a 2-1 victory over Norway, but Ronaldo did not play a single minute.
Goncalo Ramos started in attack and produced a strong performance, including a goal for Portugal.

Ronaldo remained among the substitutes until the final whistle.
That created one of the rarest moments of his extraordinary international career.
First time since Euro 2008
According to Portuguese reports, the last time Ronaldo was an unused substitute in an official Portugal match came on June 15, 2008.
Portugal faced Switzerland at Euro 2008 and lost 2-0.

Ronaldo stayed on the bench throughout that game.
From that night until the Nations League match against Norway, Ronaldo had never again been named in Portugal’s matchday squad for a competitive game without eventually entering the pitch.
That run lasted 6,678 days.
More than 18 years of international football
The statistic shows just how important Ronaldo has remained for Portugal across different generations.
During that period, he played under several national team coaches and competed in:
European Championships
World Cups
UEFA Nations League campaigns
World Cup and Euro qualifiers

Even when Ronaldo did not start, he would usually enter the match from the bench.
Against Norway, that finally changed.
Jorge Jesus planned to use Ronaldo
Portugal coach Jorge Jesus later revealed that leaving Ronaldo on the bench for the full match was not his original plan.
Jesus had expected to give the captain around:
30 MINUTES
during the second half.
However, the match developed differently.
Goncalo Ramos was playing well and had already scored.
He also had another goal ruled out.
Jesus therefore decided there was no need to make the planned change.
Ronaldo was fit to play
Jesus also made clear that Ronaldo’s absence was not caused by injury.
The Portugal captain was physically available.
The coach explained that Ronaldo was capable of playing for however long the team needed him.

The decision to leave him on the bench was tactical.
That distinction is important because Ronaldo had played nearly 70 minutes against Wales only three days earlier.
Portugal are managing Ronaldo’s minutes
At 41, Ronaldo’s playing time is naturally being managed more carefully.
Jesus had already explained before the Norway match that he did not want to start Ronaldo in two matches within such a short period.
The plan was to use him later in the game if necessary.
But Ramos’ performance and the situation on the pitch changed those plans.
For one of the rarest times in his Portugal career, Ronaldo never entered the match.
The statistic only applies to official matches
There is an important clarification behind the 18-year figure.
The record refers specifically to:
OFFICIAL COMPETITIVE MATCHES
If friendly matches are included, Ronaldo has remained on the bench more recently.
He was an unused substitute when Portugal lost 2-1 to Croatia in a friendly in June 2024.
So the 6,678-day streak should not be described as covering every Portugal match.
A strange night for Ronaldo
The unusual statistic was not the only reason Ronaldo attracted attention in Oslo.
After the final whistle, Portugal’s players stayed on the pitch and moved towards the travelling supporters.

Ronaldo instead went directly towards the tunnel.
Jesus later confirmed that he intended to speak privately with his captain about the situation.
However, Ronaldo has not publicly confirmed that his early exit was connected to the decision not to play him.
Any claim that he was protesting against the coach remains speculation.
Ronaldo’s Portugal role is changing
Ronaldo remains Portugal’s captain and the country’s greatest goalscorer.
But the Norway match showed that his role may now be managed differently.

Portugal have other attacking options, including Ramos, while Ronaldo’s minutes are being controlled more carefully.
That does not mean Ronaldo has been removed from the team’s plans.
Jesus has repeatedly made clear that he still sees the veteran striker as an important part of the squad.
An incredible streak finally ends
Very few players remain important to a national team for more than two decades.
Ronaldo has done exactly that.

From Euro 2008 until September 2026, he had always entered the pitch whenever he was available on the bench in an official Portugal match.
Against Norway, that incredible sequence finally ended.
6,678 days.
More than 18 years.
One of the longest and most unusual streaks of Cristiano Ronaldo’s international career is now over.
