The Argentine superstar was surprisingly left out of the starting lineup despite his excellent recent form.

However, Gonzalez confirmed that the decision was not related to disciplinary problems or a new injury.

Why was Lionel Messi benched?

According to ESPN, Gonzalez revealed that Messi’s recent trip to Spain was the main reason behind the decision.

The 39-year-old had travelled to Oviedo to receive the prestigious 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports on October 23.

He then returned to the United States shortly before Inter Miami’s match.

Gonzalez explained that the long journey, changes in time zones and lack of recovery time made it necessary to protect Messi’s fitness.

The coach also confirmed that the decision had been agreed upon before the match.

Inter Miami wanted Messi to recover properly and avoid unnecessary injury risks ahead of their next game.

Emil Forsberg then scored in stoppage time to secure a 2-0 victory for New York Red Bulls.

The defeat ended Inter Miami’s three-match winning streak.

Will Messi return to the starting lineup?

Despite the disappointing result, Inter Miami have already secured their place in the MLS Cup Playoffs.

The team will face FC Cincinnati on October 28 as they continue preparing for the final stages of the season.
