Mbappe was furious during the match against Paraguay

A tense atmosphere enveloped the match between France and Paraguay in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup on the morning of July 4.

A collision in the 35th minute ignited an altercation between France and Paraguay at the stadium in Philadelphia. Specifically, midfielder Andres Cubas committed a rather blatant pulling foul to prevent Mbappe from accelerating right in front of the penalty area.

Unable to keep his calm after the foul, the France captain immediately stood up and forcefully pushed Cubas, causing the Paraguayan player to react fiercely. Within just a few seconds, players from both teams rushed in simultaneously, creating a chaotic scene right on the pitch. Ousmane Dembele also quickly ran over to protect his teammate, while referee Ilgiz Tantashev had to stand directly between Mbappe and Diego Gomez to prevent the conflict from escalating.

Not long after that, Mbappe continued to be the target of the Paraguayan defense. Matias Galarza made a swinging arm motion away from the ball, causing the French striker to fall to the pitch in immense pain.

Even so, replays showed that Galarza mainly made contact with Mbappe’s arm rather than striking his face as initially perceived.

Paraguay’s aggressive and physical style of play partly proved effective as it disrupted the French players’ rhythm. The first half drew to a close with no goals scored, while Mbappe was even caught on camera laughing at his opponent’s fierce marking.

On the touchline, manager Didier Deschamps constantly protested to the referee, arguing that his players had to endure too many rough tackles.

In the second half, Mbappe scored the solitary goal in the 70th minute from the penalty spot, helping France defeat Paraguay 1-0 to secure a ticket to the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup.
