Norwegian Football Federation President Lise Klaveness declared she will take the Folarin Balogun case to the FIFA Ethics Committee, after the US striker was still allowed to play despite receiving a red card at the 2026 World Cup.
One of the biggest controversies at the 2026 World Cup continues to shock international football. Folarin Balogun was sent off in the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, but was still able to take the pitch against Belgium in the round of 16. In response to this unusual development, the Norwegian Football Federation announced it will submit a complaint to the FIFA Ethics Committee and request an explanation from world football’s most powerful governing body.
Norwegian Football Federation President Lisa Klaveness warned that the decision regarding Balogun could set a dangerous precedent, weakening the fairness of tournaments organized by FIFA.
“When a rule is bent in such a way, we enter a slippery slope that could put the entire game of football at risk. Putting the foundational principles of football into question is a true threat to the sport,” Ms. Klaveness emphasized.
The head of Norwegian football continued to criticize FIFA’s handling of the matter: “This should never have been allowed to happen. What is essential right now is to have honest communication. We all know this verdict was influenced by external forces and did not follow proper procedure. We need a FIFA leader to acknowledge that this was a mistake.”
The controversy began when Balogun received a red card following VAR intervention in the match between the US and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32. Customarily, the host team’s striker would miss the next round. However, FIFA unexpectedly determined that Balogun’s suspension was merely “conditional, accompanied by a one-year probation period.” As a result, the forward remained eligible to feature in the match against Belgium in the round of 16.
Notably, the decision was made after US President Donald Trump revealed that he had directly contacted FIFA to express his dissatisfaction over Balogun’s red card. This detail raised suspicions that political factors influenced FIFA’s disciplinary process.
The latest move by the Norwegian Football Federation could force FIFA to clarify the penalty handling procedure for Balogun. The incident not only concerns the eligibility of a single player, but also raises major questions about independence, transparency, and consistency in the disciplinary system at the 2026 World Cup.
