Inter Miami head coach, Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino, is leaving the position after leading the team to the best regular season record in MLS history this season.
Inter Miami reached the pinnacle of success after they secured two titles after Lionel Messi’s arrival. But apart from the World Cup-winning striker, another man who has been heavily credited for the club’s success is Gerardo “Tata” Martino. The Argentine football coach turned things around for Miami as they became a supremely dominant side in the MLS. After achieving success, the Argentine coach is all set to make an exit from the MLS side.
Gerardo “Tata” Martino Set To Depart From Inter Miami After Best-ever Regular Season Finish
After Inter Miami had their best-ever regular season finish at Major League Soccer (MLS), reports have stated that club manager Gerardo “Tata” Martino would resign from the MLS outfit. The Argentine football coach was brought in in July 2023 — around the time when Lionel Messi joined the South Florida-based football club. Reports also state that Gerardo “Tata” Martino’s decision to resign from the club is due to personal reasons, and there are plans for a press conference on Friday with Coach Martino and the Miami team officials for the same.
Gerardo “Tata” Martino had coached Lionel Messi at FC Barcelona and the Argentina National Football Team, where he went on to have an illustrious club football career. He eventually reunited with La Pulga in Miami. The iconic group of Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez came together once again under Tata Martino’s wing in Miami. But when the season ended earlier this month, Martino made no public signs that he was considering to leave the club.
After the debut of Tata Martino, Inter Miami went 26-9-12 in MLS regular season games during the Martino era, and it won its first two trophies — The Leagues Cup in 2023 and the Supporters Shield as the best MLS regular season team this year. With 74 points at the end, Inter Miami had one more than New England did during its 2021 record-breaking campaign. Additionally, Inter Miami tied another record by becoming the eighth team in MLS history to finish a regular season with just four losses.
Martino’s tenure at Inter Miami is not his first MLS job; in 2018, he led Atlanta United to an MLS title and was named the league’s coach of the year. The Argentine coach led Inter Miami towards regular season success never seen in the league’s history this year, despite Messi missing nearly half of the MLS season due to injuries and commitments to Argentina’s national team.
