Inter Miami names former Messi’s teammate as new manager

Former Barcelona and Argentina player Javier Mascherano has been appointed as the new head coach of Inter Miami, the club have announced.

The 40-year-old has signed a contract running through to the 2027 Major League Soccer (MLS) season and will be reunited with his former Barcelona team-mates Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Luis Suarez at the club.

Mascherano’s appointment comes following the departure of Gerardo Martino, who left the club on Friday due to personal reasons.

Miami won the Supporters’ Shield title in 2024 but had their play-off hopes ended earlier this month following defeat to Atlanta United in the first round.

Mascherano became manager of Argentina’s under-20 side in December 2021 and has coached their youth sides in major international tournaments, which recently included the 2024 Olympic Games.

Speaking about his new role, Mascherano told the Inter Miami website: “To be able to lead a club like Inter Miami is an honour for me, and a privilege I will strive to make the most of.

“I was drawn to the organisation’s undeniable ambition, and the infrastructure it has to support it.

“I’m looking forward to working with the people at Inter Miami to help the club reach new heights, and to give the fans more unforgettable moments.”

Co-owner and former England captain David Beckham added: “Throughout his career as one of the world’s best players and as an experienced coach, Javier has always demonstrated what makes him great – relentless determination with the knowledge, instincts and understanding to back it up.

“We’re very excited to welcome him to lead our team.”

During his playing career Mascherano made over 350 appearances for Barca, where he won two Champions League trophies, five LaLiga titles, five Copa del Rey trophies and two Super Cups.

He represented Argentina 147 times and is their second-most capped player after Miami skipper Messi.
