Real Madrid supporters are completely furious with left-back Alvaro Carreras following what many are calling a defensive “disasterclass” during their 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg.
On Tuesday night, Alvaro Arbeloa’s squad welcomed Vincent Kompany’s high-flying Bayern side to a closed-roof Santiago Bernabeu, desperately hoping to bounce back from a weekend loss to Mallorca. Instead, the German giants dictated the tempo and walked away with a crucial victory, leaving Los Blancos with a massive mountain to climb in next week’s return leg in Bavaria.
Costly Defensive Errors Sink Madrid
The defensive struggles for Real Madrid began late in the first half. In the 41st minute, former Liverpool winger Luis Diaz managed to slip right behind his old teammate, Trent Alexander-Arnold, before slotting the ball past goalkeeper Andriy Lunin to open the scoring.
Things went from bad to worse shortly after the halftime break. Bayern doubled their lead when Aleksandar Pavlovic easily dispossessed Alvaro Carreras deep in Madrid’s half. The turnover allowed Michael Olise to tee up a waiting Harry Kane, who ruthlessly smashed the ball into the net from the edge of the penalty area.
“Goddamn Carreras”: Fans Erupt on Social Media
While Alexander-Arnold faced heavy criticism for his role in the first goal, it was Carreras who bore the absolute brunt of the fanbase’s anger online. Fans quickly took to social media to demand the defender be dropped immediately.

- Praising Bayern’s attack, a fourth noted: “Olise is simultaneously exposing the level of Carreras and that of Vinicius and Mbappé. Olise is doing whatever he wants with the full-backs.”
- “Someone tell Carreras that he’s playing a football match,” a sixth fan joked bitterly.
A Glimmer of Hope
Despite the defensive nightmare, Real Madrid managed to pull one back in the 74th minute. Redeeming his earlier lapse in concentration, Alexander-Arnold delivered a perfectly curled ball for Kylian Mbappé to tap home, restoring a faint glimmer of hope around the Bernabeu.
Real Madrid will look to hit the reset button this Friday when they host Girona in La Liga, before traveling to Germany next week to try and salvage their Champions League campaign.
