Lionel Messi was spotted crying following his opening goal for Argentina during their Group J clash against Algeria at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Following the match, the superstar clarified why he was so emotional.
The legendary forward broke down in tears just after netting the first of his three goals during Argentina’s World Cup opener against Algeria on Monday evening. Messi eventually secured his first-ever World Cup hat-trick, tying Miroslav Klose’s all-time tournament scoring record in the process. Although supporters were overjoyed to witness the captain performing at his peak, his tearful reaction to that initial goal left many puzzled.

During the post-match press conference, the 38-year-old was questioned about his tears. He disclosed that he had been facing personal struggles just before the tournament began, noting that his emotional display was completely unrelated to the sport.
“It had nothing to do with football, I went through some difficult days,” the Argentine captain explained. “It was a matter totally unrelated to sports; I went through some difficult, complicated days.”
Even though he opted not to divulge the exact nature of his situation, Messi shared his deep appreciation for the national team and the Argentine staff, thanking them for their unwavering support during his tough times. “I’m grateful to the entire delegation, to my teammates. They made a lot of effort to make sure I am doing well,” he added.

Looking back at his overall performance and journey, Messi referred to his current era as the “cherry on top”, acknowledging the vast array of accomplishments and experiences he has gathered throughout his lengthy career.
“It makes me very happy to have lived through everything that came my way. What I’m experiencing now is the “cherry on top”,” the forward stated. “I’m very happy and grateful for this wonderful group. I am enjoying it so much.”
Argentina’s head coach, Lionel Scaloni, found himself speechless after La Albiceleste kicked off their title defense with a commanding 3-0 win against the African side. “I am at a loss for words about Leo. What can I say?” Scaloni remarked. “He’s incredible.”
