Mbappe catches up with Messi in World Cup top scorer race

Mbappe scored a brace, helping France defeat Sweden 3-0, thereby equaling Lionel Messi’s scoring achievement at the 2026 World Cup with 6 goals each.

The match started without much excitement as both teams entered cautiously and were continuously interrupted by fouls. Sweden was the team to create the first notable situation with a shot on target from Alexander Isak, while France faced difficulties against the opponent’s tightly organized defense.

However, the class of top stars helped “Les Bleus” make a difference. Mbappe repeatedly caused the Swedish defense to wobble with his speed and bursting ability. Although he had a goal disallowed for offside, the Real Madrid forward did not have to wait too long. Right before the first half closed, from a subtle corner kick combination situation, Mbappe appeared at the right time and unleashed a clinical finish to open the scoring.

Entering the second half, France completely controlled the match. Michael Olise continued to showcase his important role by creating sharp passes, including an assist that helped Bradley Barcola double the lead. Sweden was virtually incapable of resisting the continuous pressure from the reigning world runners-up.

In the 74th minute, Mbappe completed his brace with a world-class curling strike following a pass from Olise. This goal moved Mbappe past Miroslav Klose to become the second-highest goalscorer in World Cup history with 18 strikes, just 1 goal shy of Messi’s record.

In addition, this victory made France the first team in history to score at least three goals in 5 consecutive World Cup matches, while affirming that they are currently one of the most fearsome contenders of the tournament. Meanwhile, Sweden had to say a highly regretful farewell after a journey of much effort.
